Well as you offered: Did the foam in the bars really make them stronger?  ???

Bloody good question....the answer is yes but to what degree I can't say. I filed a patent for the idea in 1985 and over a decade later during the bid to join France and England one bid was a bridge and I kid you not the steel structure was filled with urathane foam for structual strenth and light weight!!! Had they chose the bridge over the tunnel I could have been a billionaire!! haha.

In 1985 we did a limited production run of handle bars and seat posts with the polyurathane injection foam. The foam is not like what you get today from the hardware store so don't go running out to get some and squirt it into your tubes. It's the "industrial strength" with crazy rates of expansion and probably highy toxic. We had to get a license and permits before we could even buy it to test it. The first few seat posts we did all the caps blew off as the foam expanded and I actually burnt my hand from the heat generated. We kinda gave up on trying to perfect getting the foam in and keeping it in, it was a messy job and many bars and seat posts had to be junked because of caps comming off. To this day I know of one rider who still sports the same Space seat post he got from me back in 85' and it's still straight so I guess that's your answer...TJ

That's so great to hear you still have a pair!!! I can't remember how many Space Bars where sold but the numbers were more in the "exclusive" catagory if you know what I mean. If you had a pair then you were dam serious about BMX. Due to the limited numbers and manufacturing expense each Sapce Bar cost more to make than most bars where retailing for back then. Even the 4130 tubing alone was shipped in from the U.S, I felt this is where the best chrome molly was being produced at the time and I'm not one to compromise. I will check for you if there are any original stickers left (slim chance) but you never now there may be somthing at my mums house tucked away in a draw...TJ

Cool thanks for sharing the picture!!!

Here is a pic of my last remaining pair of Space Bars. These were used on the last several bikes I rode (back in the day). I am a bit attached to these as you can imagine.

I will check in to see if any stickers have shown up. Sorry for the delay caught up in work stuff.

I've never seen anyone else do them.

Back in about '85 my GT Performer was sent to Space for a paintjob back in the 80s, a lovely shade of loud pink. Free sticker, great paint, rode that bike everywhere.
Not sure who I kept calling about the bars, but they probably got a bit sick of me. They were always 'on the way' but I never did see any for sale.
