Injuries
« on: July 30, 2014, 10:41 PM »
Got a really pants injury yesterday.  Just hopped up a curb and for some reason my left ankle wasn't impressed.  Swollen and painful to ride on now.  I was meant to be going mountain biking in Cannock CHase tomorrow but a test ride around the block saw me nearly pass out when I dropped of a curb.  What's the quickest way to fix this up?

Also, whilst on topic what's the worst injury you've picked up during your a BMX antics?

Broken collar bone 2 months after getting back into it in 2009 ... never broken anything in my life until then.

Used Mat Hoffman as inspiration to get back riding  :daumenhoch:

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

If there's no real damage to the joint then follow the RICE procedure (rest ice compression elevation).  I find ice cold ibuprofen gel straight from the fridge really helps  :daumenhoch:

I had lots of cuts and bruises from the old days (still got the scars!) but no breaks. Modern days broken cocyx, strained knee ligaments, strained ligaments across bottom of my hands (a few times  :uglystupid2:), and a nice deep cut right down to my knee cap 2 months ago.

But that's nothing compared to most of the old gits I ride with eg Diggler, Richie, Rooski, Nada, Greg etc  :10_2_12:

Yep, using the RICE method and it seems to be working well.

Mat - well done for not crying  :LolLolLolLol:  I bet there were a few choice words muttered that would have got you in trouble BITD day though.

I remember when a friend of mine slammed on his shoulder hard and broke his collar bone.  You could see the pointy bit of the bone on the verge of coming through the skin.  He was rolling around screaming trying ot convince one of us to stamp on it as he thought he' dislocated his shoulder.  Probably a good job nobody there had the balls to try that one.

I did that BITD with a rat trap at full back spin thanks to a coaster brake, shins have got to be one of the most painful parts to bash IMO, apart from placing your peanuts either side of the top tube of course
Years ago my dad did something very funny, I built a jump in the back garden and my dad said give us a go , he jumped off the ramp but he landed with his arse on the rear tyre with forward rotation wedging his meat and 2 veg in between the tyre and rear brake bridge, that's what happens when jumping in swimming trunks with a string lining :coolsmiley:
I've never laughed so much :2funny:

Broken left kneecap, all four fingers across my left palm and 3 stitches to my forehead following a BMX head-on at a place called Linley Woods in the Midlands in '85 (closest thing to a natural half-pipe I've seen). I was lucky - the other guy ended up with a fractured skull  :-\

Ahh Linley woods that's just round the corner from my parents' old house
Not sure about the 'natural' bit though I think it was an old limestone quarry, but I know the bit you're on about - almost vertical drop down and then shoot up (watch out for the tree root halfway lol)

Yup, they're actually Bell Pits for limestone extraction, plus there's a massive limestone mine (now flooded) under the surrounding area. Awesome place, and a BMX paradise BITD.
