prolite rebuild

ok, I need a little help everybody, rebuidling my prolite (chrome frame, rear brake mounting behind the b/b) and having a little bit of a stem nightmare. I have been given a cheapy quill stem to fit, but doesn't come anywhere close to fitting, the forks do have a quill in them, but  i don't understand why this doesnt fit, does this mean it's the other type? am I missing something here?!!

How old is the prolite ? if its the old school type then a standard bmx stem should fit it, could the stem you`ve been given be a montain bike one ?

are the top of the forks
a: threaded?
b: a hollow tube?
c: both? (threaded but with a bit sticking up)

if:

a: a regular old-mid school bmx stem will fit
b: you need a clamp on stem, most likely 1 1/8" but there are some 1" threadless forks about
c: you need either a 1" clamp on stem, or a 1 1/8" with a shim

i'm almost certain the bike is a mid schooler (early 90's) i can't really give you much more info than that to be honest, other than the fact it is chrome, the rear brake caliper in mounted behind the bottom bracket and on the top tube is a kind of box section built onto the frame. as for the forks, they dont look as though they are threaded but they still have a quill in the centre. I haven't build a bmx in well over 10 years, let alone ridden one, so i am a little rusty at this!!
