Who Owns The Oldest BMX On RAD?
« on: July 15, 2014, 08:20 PM »
I'll admit, I'm not a big fan of anything pre '83, as I didn't get into BMX until then, so don't remember anything about it.

That being said, I've got a big respect and appreciation for these bikes, standing the test of time, and more respect for you guys that restore them and hang out for era correct parts. These bikes were the front runners for the bikes that came later on, that I loved.

So....who's got the oldest?

Lets see them, conplete's or frames.

How low can you go?

I'd say Sean's stingray is the oldest bike.

There's a few with early Geese 77 onwards,  the earliest I have is a 75 Webco.

Is '75 regarded as the first year of BMX then Ash?

November 1970 was the first official BMX race held in California in a Motorcross track. The original event was organised by the OM under his newly formed B.U.M.S  ( Bicycle United Motocross Society ).

Most raced on converted stingrays etc.

From memory the first Looptail BMX was a Redline, Jeff Haney obviously owns that one.

First my DG then the Webco  :LolLolLolLol:  you'll be wanting the Dan Gurney after that   :LolLolLolLol:
I'll have a root around for some pics Mike  :daumenhoch: I don't have the mags for it though, missed out on a few sets over the years and the $1000 starting price usually puts me off.
And year Jeff's bike is amazing.

For my next build, when I can be bothered to build it I have a 1975 A&A, I just need to start putting some parts on it.

The Stingray frame I've posted about in the Vintage section is 70-71 at the latest. It has no serial no. stamping on the head tube and I have read they were stamped there from late 71 onwards. I am back home tomorrow night so can hopefully date it then. By the current state of it though I'd put it down as pre-Ark.

"The first Schwinn BMX-specific bicycle came out in 1975 (The Scrambler) so you know things were well on their way years prior to the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world coming out with their version."
"Since 1975 was the first year a BMX bicycle was available on a wide geographic scale, we'll use that as a rough starting point for "old school BMX"." (http://dirtysow.com/Eras_of_BMX_Defined.html)

I'd say definitely wire as per photo. Not 100% sure what year motomags came out but I believe the action shot was in 74

Motomags came out in 74'.OL Snaggletooth was a test rider for Bmx Products & RL being the main badass on Rick's team & Rick was one of the first guys to get motomags.I'm sure that front is a motomag Ash.You can tell by the hub & can defo see the motomag spoke pattern in the pic.The rear looks to be wire though.   :daumenhoch:

Another interesting point is that Jeff says the bike he has (which is the action shot bike) is a 74, where's Rick Twomey says it's definitely a 73 and still has the receipt from Redline.

Looking closer at the pic your right on the hub section. As always throughout the early days parts were developed / tested and swapped out on a regular basis with the riders.

Dan RAD has a plethora of hidden knowledge and it's only when questions like yours are asked do we get to see some of it  :daumenhoch:

The Redline in the pic is the very first hard tail BMX. A bit off topic but nice to touch on the early stays a little.
