Does restoration accuracy affect value?
« on: June 18, 2014, 01:20 AM »

I recently found my '86 Haro sport in a trash pit out at our farm. The Peregrine Masters are long gone, but the rest of the bike is all here and in perfect shape.
The green paint is faded and the stickers are cracked and faded. It needs some restoration I think.
- Are "survivor" bikes more valuable unrestored?
Ideally I know powder coating is the way to go but I thought about removing the paint and go all chrome.
- Is that a bad idea?
Instead of Master mags I would rather get some period spokes instead.
- Bad Idea? Wheel Recommendations?

Thanks forum

Yep, as Nick said, you've got a nice piece of history there, and it's yours from BITD, something most if us would live to own.

Just strip/clean/regrease/build/ride/enjoy.

You'll easily be able to get some similar condition survivor parts to use on it, grips, seat etc.

It's horses for courses, if you like it in survivor mode, keep it that way and pick up a used pair of Peregrine 48's for it and some repro Panaracer tyres and you are away.  If you want it to look like it did the day you got it, do a full resto.  Whatever you do will affect it's value, hopefully it has more sentimental value to you and you want to keep it.  If not, you didn't know you had so whatever you sell it for is a bonus.

Just powder it white like everyone else seemed to be doing on here a while back  :yahoo_silent:

Seriously, over-restored bikes are 2 a penny and yours will only carry the battle scars of your younger days once!
Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

The box is a rifle crate from Russia. It held 24 re-arsenaled M-9130 Mosin Nagants. I used to work for an importer.

Survivors are cool  :daumenhoch:

As for stripping it back to chrome, I've found a lot of the painted ones are chrome underneath, but the chrome was never 100%. Years ago I won what was described as a chrome original 86 Master, when I got it you could see traces of the green paint in places & it looked like it hadn't been chromed on the BB & head tube  ::)

question for you , how many survivor out there compared to new painted frames . hardly any survivors out there and as the years roll on value will go up more on original bikes .
too be honest i`m not in it for value, price at all as i love bmx as my roots and past so my bikes are priceless

To answer your question "Does restoration accuracy affect value?" The answer is 100% yes. If you are going down the restoratien route, how you do your restoration will have everything to do with the value once you are finished.
