Is it a good idea to take a file the axle to slim them down ?
Or take it too a machine shop ?

you can dremil them off but leave the nut on so you can recut the end of the threads once you've cut them down by unscrewing the nut

put the wheel on the bike and tighten the nuts, hacksaw the end of the axle off leaving about 3-4 threads showing then unscrew the axle nuts to clean the thread. it's a 5 minute job.

Yep, take your time and it's a simple job with a file or grinder
Just wait till you have a 14mm Ti axle to fit into a 10mm frame slot...... now that was a bit of a sweat-on getting sorted
