Early 80's raleigh burner with Monkey Bars
« on: June 02, 2014, 04:39 PM »
Hi all,

New to the forum (browsed many times but only just registered) and im mainly looking for a bit of info/advice.

I have been clearing out my cellar and rediscovered an old BMX which i believe is a raleigh burner.

Here are some pics and im just wondering if anyone can help identify it and and parts. I'm pretty sure the bars are monkey bars.

I'm looking to sell it after a bit of light restoration and wonder wether to part it or sell it as a whole.

I also have a 99 Zippo which is my pride and joy as well as a GT thud and another unidentified one which i cant seem to find!

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It's an 84 Mk2 Chrome Burner, not worth a great deal as it is, or even with a light resto sadly, they're very common, even 30 years on, worth about £60 for the frame and forks.

:welcome to  :radbmxsmilie: all the sane though.  :daumenhoch:

Looking again at this, I think it may have been a Super Tuff Burner that has had the gold superchrome stripped off, are there any traces of gold flakes still on the frame? Also, on the rear brake bridge, there will be stamping, it may say MT-CROMO?

What makes me think this is spotting the Suntour Arrow seat clamp and Sugino spider, parts found on a ST.

They are VDC bars by the look of them, worth far more than all the other bits combined.  :daumenhoch:

Fantastic. I'm not a burner hater myself (as I wanted one back in the day), but some would say that you have the highs and lows of old school bmx on the same bike. Those Monkey Bars would fetch around £200 ish. Wecome to RAD!

Thanks for all the help guys,

Retrodan -  thanks for that. i originally thought it was a super tuff because of the forks but apparently (according to my local BMX shop) its got the wrong wheels. wheels could have been changed any time. i will have a look for gold traces but not seen any. i've also been told it may be an Aero Burner. Either way since ive rediscovered it i'm growing to like it more!

Griff - Thanks for the welcome. will get some pics of other bikes up soon. Zippo has been ridden its whole life and gone through some bars and a crankset but still looks sweet. The thud is basically a wreck but i suppose that's what the name suggests!

Dancetothedrummersbeat - thanks. ive had a few burners when i was a kid and rode them all into the ground. didnt know this was a burner when i got it all those years ago. was just lovely and cheap! Never really liked the bars but they certainly have an interesting look.

BMX1973 - so do i but ive always loved Haro's and basically anything a bit different. mmm twin top tubes.

Interesting!!  :-\

I only thought it was Ultra's that were full CroMo, I'm guessing ST's are too, I'll check on mine tonight.

Rob (Pickle) has bought a ST survivor, I'll get him to take a look at his also.  :daumenhoch:
