We have been discussing things between the admin/mods and have decided that the Show and Shine judging at MK14 (and subsequent years) will no longer be picked by admin, it will be picked and judged by you the members of Radbmx®.

What I propose in this thread is:

a) outline the job and what it entails.
b) take nominations or volunteers for the job
c) if somebody is nominated then I would like that person to accept or refuse the nomination in this thread.
d) we will then run a poll/vote to see who the (un)lucky judges are

I hope that makes sense.

The reason that I would like the person nominated to accept in this thread is because it is not an easy job and I do not want it thrust on somebody who really doesn't fancy the task ahead.

So here we go

a)  Judging can be tricky, you will have approx 1000 BMX's to look at, study and decide which ones are worthy of a prize or mention (medal).

Anybody who has judged a S&S concours competition before whether that is BMX or cars, motorbikes etc, will know what an emense task it can be.  You start off thinking I am not going to be really anal about era correct parts etc, however you then find you have 4 or 5 bikes almost identical, so you then have to get anal about parts on the bike, simply because you HAVE to be able to differentiate between them to get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Therefore a big requirement will be a good/solid knowledge of original parts vs repo parts, ages and era's of parts, OG finish vs refinished etc etc etc.  You honestly will start obsessing over the age of a brake cable.

This also leads me to the next bit, the judging of the S&S will and does take up a lot of your Sunday afternoon.  We usually close the S&S entry about 12pm and then judging needs to start as it has to be completed by the end of the days racing so the prizes can be given out.

I am not trying to make the job sound hard or over play it at all and I am not trying to put anybody off of judging it, I just want you to know exactly what you are letting yourself into.

There will be enough ex-judges/admin/mods around to help in any way we can with any queries/questions etc, so you will not be on your own.

When the final judges have been decided then we (royal we as in admin) will then make sure we liaise and make things as easy to judge as we can, we will supply the marking sheets and also if you need some dogs bodies then we will make sure you have whatever is needed.

So that leads us onto the next part.....

b) Volunteers and nominations, have a read of the above again, then put names forward in this thread ONLY.

I will keep an eye on things and of course message me (or any admin/mod) if you need any clarification of what is required.

I would say that if you do nominate somebody then let them now they have been nominated and point them in the direction of this thread.  I will not include anybody in the vote/poll that has not accepted the nomination as it is just not fair.

We need 3-5 judges for this task, that can be 3-5 judges to judge everything or we can have specialised judges for each S&S category, which would mean less time judging and more time enjoying MK.

It really is up to you guys how it is done.

Sawzall for me, no one knows his way around a bike than Phil, dubber is another guy who would make a cracking judge even if he needs help getting upto the grips n seat.
Also fat Sam Met, he is away dogging for Mk, but if it's 82 to 84 there ain't much Sam don't know.....apart from Camo pads

An extremely difficult job no doubt about it. Any thoughts for having judges for specific categories as a mid school expert may struggle with vintage etc  :)

And yes for Mike  :daumenhoch:

I was thinking along those lines also Ash, I don't mind how it is done as long as the decisions are made.

So of course specific judges for categories would also benefit as each judge wouldn't have to spend so long judging.

Thanks Ash, I have updated the original post to reflect this.

2 - 3 per category, can't vote for their own bike etc but will be able to watch some of the racing which is a massive bonus.

It will help to speed things up for sure, the only issue I can see is all the separate judges deciding on bike of the show.  :-\

All great shouts and nominations, but unless you get the person you have nominated to accept that nomination in this thread, it will be a useless nomination.

As I said I will not just thrust this job onto somebody who doesn't want it, they have to be happy to do it and understand what it entails.

I really appreciate the thought Paul & dan but after doing it for three years at the bb events I realise exactly what's involved.
I like to go round & gently soak up the BMX loveliness at my leisure whilst chatting to guys without the feeling of any pressure.
The judging is a high pressure job. It was for around 130 burners never mind the delites we have at MK.

Now that is a comment from a man that has been there, done that and is not going anywhere near it again in the future.
