Which Brakes???
« on: May 16, 2014, 04:05 PM »
Apart from the usual MX1000/900's and Tech 3's, which brake set would you recommend for an '84 build??

Front and rear.

I've always liked 1020s and 890s with prebents.

Then again maybe Shimano levers for 84. Prefer the SX which were two tone over the DX.

Cheers bro. Would those calipers work on a freestyle bike? The levers wouldn't I know though  :D

For freestyle you need brakes with a little more grunt so to speak.  MX900/1000s are way better the 890s or 1080s for freestyle if à little later than 84 you could go the Odyssey 1999/2000 option.

Yer I know Marty. I just din't want to go the MX1000/900 route as, quite frankly, they are overpriced and boring. Everybody has them on everything and just thought maybe I should try something a little different. The trouble is, I am date OCD at the moment  :D   ;D

I know some freestyle bikes did come with 890s front and rear.

Sure some of the cheaper Mongoose Freestylers came with this set up.  :-\

You are so right about MX900/1000's, overpriced and boring, boring, boring, however there really wasn't that many other options for brakes other than DC 890's or Shimano Tourney.

Funny you mention Tourney Sean. I am just looking into those at the minute. The issue I have, it is a Freestyle F+F and quite rare, meaning it is not run of the mill so, I don't just want to throw anything on it. But, I am thinking of just throwing on some real cheap budget stuff, original items of course, not repop rubbish  ;D

Describing MX brakes as boring is a modern day builders hang up. I understand that when you're building lots of bikes its nice to mix things up and thankfully for most parts there is a wide variety of options but that really isn't the case with brakes.

BITD you chose MX as they were the best brakes, if you're building a high end freestyler (and i think i know what it is) to do it justice IMO there can be only one consideration...  :daumenhoch:

I'd give Odyssey brakes some consideration.
