My plan may have backfired as I thought we had a UK PS3 but it turns out it's an Australian one so I don't think they will work on our one

Aussie games and UK games will work on both UK and Aussie consoles. AFAIK there's no region coding on the PS3, but even if there was both Aussie and UK consoles are PAL.
