Spencer Wheels.
« on: August 03, 2005, 08:58 PM »
I was in an old ironmongers the other day when I came across a pair of red anodised Spencer alloys. The shop owner said that he'd had them for over 20 years, they were in very good nick. Has anyone ever heard of them?, and were they any good (I did'nt get a price).

Anyone?.

Spencer Wheels were made by a tiny wheel company in Tenbury Wells, in northwesternmost Worcestershire. 1 3/8ths rims were a speciality. I only know this coz I grew up in that strange little town in the middle of nowhere and got dragged there on school visits as a 10-year-old to see the wheels being made. They were pretty good I think although I always did the sensibile thing and stuck to Arayas of course. The MD's son was called Philip Banks and he raced on the wheels all the time. Mainly NBMXA Midlands regionals I think.

I remember them! My mate had some chrome 1 3/8 th's built up for his Mongoose. They were really nice race wheels as I recall.

Random googling led me back here to dig this up...

Anyone got any more info on Spencer rims? ( or even better a couple of 24" tucked away?)

You still quietly looking for British stuff Griff?

Didnt Sam have some spencer rims for sale a few weeks ago?
Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Not that quietly  :teef: still researching at the mo (house buying means no bmx bits for a while!)
Doesn't hurt to have a nose about though  ;)
Sam had a pair of 20" but when the time comes I'll be needing cruiser wheels

Phil Sawzall is your man for Spencer rims. Very sweet looking rims, similar to 7Bs  :smitten:

Hi All, go gently on me as its my first post. I have 3 or 4 20 x 1.75 rims buried in the shed and at least 2 are NOS but do have tiny marks on. They are red and blue and I have no idea what they sell for nowadays. I will sort them out and post a piccy.

Here you go. They do have a lot of storage marks but nothing bad. I could only find 2 so I must have sold the others but cant remember. The red one was built into a complete wheel but neither has seen a brake block.

Yup - Spencers.  :Great_Britain:

I decided to try to track down a pair of these about 12months ago, but didn't have too much luck.

One NOS 20 x 1.75 (in gold) came up for sale on eBay and I grabbed that, i was the only bidder and got it for a snip. In fact i mistakenly bid on it thinking it was a pair (duuur) but i seem to recall getting it for 12quid not including postage.

When it arrived it was spot-on though, great finish, still wrapped in paper with a nice deep Spencer stamping. Just on the hunt for a second one now so i can put them onto something. I'd really like some skinnies though, but have never seen a Spencer set of those. (Anybody got some??)
