So is 2014 the year of the BMX underdog?
« on: April 13, 2014, 09:31 PM »
The last few months on here have seen some great old low end bikes being saved restored and ridden, the burner (not an underdog in my eyes, but to some maybe) has taken a massive upturn in popularity once again, with members snapping up burner bargains, the Facebook pages are buzzing with low end rescues. And the feedback people getting is nothing but good.

I think this is great, a BMX is a BMX after all, each one played a part in BMX history, albeit maybe not your own BMX history, but to someone that woolworths/ garage forecourt BMX was a stepping stone into the rabbit hole that it BMX

I shall leave with my brothers first two ventures into old/mid school low end restoration

Maybe it's the lack of disposable income for lots or the fact that every make/model/colour combo has pretty much been done, and done again and then some. People look for different things to keep the fire alight after they've built everything they wanted.

I think this is a factor too ash, and the rising prices of good parts, makes these little low ends affordable and fun

Building my Piranha was great, so simple and uncomplicated, just BIN items on eBay from Bankrupt Bike Parts etc.

No getting outbid, no need for named parts, and not costing £££'s.

I love a POS.   :coolsmiley:

This is a very interesting topic Jaymz, l read your first paragraph and i totally get it. Trouble is, i really dont know which side of the fence im on. The biggest part of me (no, not my nose) is a bike snob, however i do own a brilliant survivor example of my first bmx, an '82 puch. I like it, but its truly wank to ride. I wouldnt buy any more pos's because even a quid would be too much to spend on something i wont ride, even with a sense of irony or nostalgia. So, there i am. A slightly hypocritical snob with a fairly narrow view who likes looking at low end stuf, but mainly to scoff at them. Unless its my own pos then that's fine.

It's not about sides Ben, it's about equality and recognition

For example, this

Is just as relevant to BMX history as this (a stretch I know) but you get the point

Yeah, I agree. That hutch is pure vulgar though, bad choice of example! I like the cutesy-ness of the iron horse, and I see it's place in the grand scheme of things, but to me, it's undeniably a pos and therefore worthless. I can appreciate that if the iron horse had been your first bike, or the first bike you lusted after, then it would have some nostalgic pull, but i think that the feeling of nostalgic warmth could only apply to one specific bike per person. So you're all allowed one, and one only in your collection  :police:  :)
Don't get me wrong, I like nostalgia, but I wouldn't get my hand in my pocket to attain any.
Also, I reserve the right to completely change my mind by the end of this thread.

RL-20II Guy on vintagebmx

it's about keeping the whole fleet afloat ;) :D ...most like the Masters etc, but as J said, there was more to it, so its a good thing to appreciate the odd pos (..resto), too, don't you think so too...?

Not seen that before, so that's a hutch a Haro and redline in gold now, all they're doing is emulating the super burner!!!!
