Lacing a 36sp wheel

Hi, I'm going to re lace a 36 spoke wheel into another rim because it's damaged, I plan on copying the front wheel, I can't get my head around the fact that the spokes bend over each other and cross under the next spoke making it look like a wicker basket  instead of being nice and straight , why is it like this on a bicycle rim ?  has anyone tried to lace it the other way and come across a problem ?
In the picture below it just looks messy to me, this is not my wheel just a pretty bad example of one.
If you try to remove the spoke between the letters A and I , you would have to remove the spoke between U  and K first to get it out.
Surely if you laced the spokes the other way around they would also be straight

Lace it in the correct way, tighten, true & it will be fine.

If it isn't then you've done it wrong & Sean will visit with a chainsaw.

That lacing on the white wheel is what is known as race lace, all the spoke heads are on the inside of the hub, that is a very specialist way of lacing a wheel.

The usual way is for half the spokes to be laced so the heads are on the inside and half on the outside, that way you don't have so much undulation of the spokes.

 The wheels are using small flange suzue hubs if that makes any difference to the lacing method.
 I've only just noticed that the heads of the spokes are all on the inside of the white wheel, the wheel i have is inbetween the blue and the white , this is the actual wheel below.
The Z rim has a flat in it at the 8 O'clock position were it looks like it's hit a kerb at sometime , i have another Z rim to replace it.
I can tru the rim no problem

I'm going to go with the original lacing pictured above, am I right in saying that i will need lace all the spokes to the hub then drop the wheel rim over it to put he nipples in ?
 Building the wheels like the blue rims is easy, I can drop the spokes in the hub and lace one spoke at a time to the rim .

easy way if doing a straight swap is put tape on all the spoke cross overs, undo the nips, jiggle it out of the rim, the jiggle it into the new one.

or do it properly, its dead easy.

yep this makes rim changes so much easier!!!
