1983 JMC LONG STANDARD
« on: March 25, 2014, 11:34 AM »
So finally I have got round to giving my original race bike a little TLC. It's a JMC Long Standard which was originally shipped to Hotwheels in Bournemouth in February 1983 and raced by myself earning me the number 14 UKBMX ranking in the 83/84 season. It was hung up in my parents garage for around 25 years before I finally got round to stripping it down and rebuilding it to it's former glory this month.

I wanted to keep as many of the original parts as I could and not just go down the NOS route! I wanted the bike to be as close to how I remember riding it all those years ago! NOS parts just wouldn't have felt right - no connection with the past if you know what I mean.

The original colour from the factory was Candy blue with white forks. The finish had to be perfect so after reading many of the threads praising the work of Superbike Dan I had the frame and forks powdered by PWSFinishing - fantastic job guys. I rebuilt the Mavic TTM4 rims and Shimano hubs re-lacing the wheels with new spokes. The Campagnolo Strada cranks were polished as were the Robinson bars and the other parts given the same treatment and rebuilt back onto the frame. The MX brake was the only part that needing respraying by myself.

The only NOS parts were the Amé grips, repro pad set, plate, pedals and decals. The inner-tubes are still the originals from 1985/6!

I won't bore you any longer so I'll let the pictures do the talking… first of which is one of me racing the bike BITD (gate 2).

(Finally, thanks go to Matt Farrow for BB and headset installation).

That's a killer bike, JMCs are pure race heaven, can't believe mine is going tomorrow.  :(

The pic is ace too, the poor guy on the Burner must have felt a right tit lining up next to a Hutch, JMC & Torker.  :LolLolLolLol:

Absolutely one of a kind.

In a restoration world where its difficult to get differentiation this just stands alone.

Cheers guys - and FYI there will be another resto to come but it might take more time (and money!!). It's another of my race bikes from BITD and it's even older!!
