87' Mongoose decade build (put together for a look see)
« on: February 07, 2014, 01:13 PM »
Hi, I'm 34 years old and I think this may be the start of my mid life crisis.  For the past few months I've been dreaming of my old BMX days and although I was never any good at riding one I just had the urge to relive my youth a little and get the bike I always wanted that my parents wouldn't buy me.

So after a bit of searching (and one 98 GT Dyno Comp later), I came across the beginning of my project.......

As you can see from the photos it's in pretty damn good condition.  I got all the little bits the go with the spin tech, rear pegs and front pegs too.

I bought this off ebay and it arrived today.....

My original plan was to strip the anodizing off it but it's in such good condition i'm not entirely sure now.  I might wait until i've put it together and make the decision then.

So what's left to get..........

Dia compe 880 front brake
Dia compe A750 rear brake
SR Crank arms
Fluted Layback seat post
Pro class V 48s
Mongoose Freestyle badge (gutted it's missing and I think this'll be a bugger to get hold of).

So there it is, my first build and I'm looking forward to it.  I've been trawling ebay day after day in the hope that some of these parts might come up.  If anyone has any they want to sell then I'd be very greatful.  Also any suggestions welcome.

Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Not according to the Mongoose 1987 catalogue

http://www.vintagemongoose.com/pdfs/mongoose_cat87.pdf

I'd love a pair of pro series 48's though if you know of any going?

ah yeah, should have guessed yours is the 87 with the more angular standing platform front.

OK, I've dug out of my garage a pair of Haro forks which I believe belong to the following bikes...........

1993 HARO BLAMMO
1993 Haro Sport
1993  Air Master.

A long shot I know but would anybody like to trade them for some Mongoose Decade parts?

Another peice of the puzzle aquired.  They were a little yellowed but I've had them in bleach over night which has whitened them up a little but not as much as I'd like.  Any suggestions???

decade is looking good. dont strip the gold anno, swap it for a silver one, they are not that uncommon.

I'm liking the sound of that easier option.

Anyone got a silver chain ring they would like to swap for a gold one?

Few more bits of the puzzle obtained.  Pro Class wheels, SR Crank arm and traded my gold chain ring for this lovely chrome one.  Some more parts in the post too.  I'm getting close to putting something together now.

Thats really nice. Cant beat a goose.   :smitten: Must be quite rare in chrome as most are white or mint green.

I see you have seen the vintage mongoose site. Might be worth asking them if they do a repop badge for the head tube since they do most of the other sticker sets.  :-\

Looking forward to seeing built up.  :)

Did you buy this from a guy in brum who goes by the name 80 skidjoey on ebay. If so then i also bought this frame set from him when he was trading under the name Beautytherapy but he decided it would be better to try and rip me off by not sending it, had to open a case on him to get my money back, I have since bought another decade from a guy who also bought this and got riped off. So all in all you have had a great result in getting it and gutted he never sent it as it looks mint and very rare. Good luck with the build and keep the updates coming

I did indeed Mr67.   I was able to go to him and collect so he couldn't really get away with it.  I paid cash on delivery.  He seemed like a geniune nice bloke too, can't believe he's been doing that.  You want his address?   :LolLolLolLol:

Some more extremely vital pieces aquired over the weekend including the head tube badge.  Nice condition 880 and A750 too.  I was watching an auction on a complete bike when the guy took it off early.  I contacted him just to see what price he'd been offered and he told me he wasn't prepared to let it go for silly cheap and decided to break it.  I managed to dib dobs these beauties.  I only need seat post and bottom bracket set now and I'm on the road.

So, plan of attack is going to be as follows I think.  Citric  Acid bath on Frame, forks and bars to remove the little bit rust there is.  Get the levers, seat clamp, spider, calipers and possibly spin tech powder coated (I need to do a little research into getting and reapplying the spin tech decals though).  Stick it together and feel pleased with myself.

Thanks but no i got my money back and was able to find another decade, Im glad you didn't get ripped off. Regarding the spin tech decal i think del's decals can do them, his decade decals he supplied me are bang on and arrived with in 3 days of ordering. The olny missing part im after is also a mongoose frame badge. I would love to see it when its finished.

Mr67 - to be honest I didn't think I'd ever find the head tube badge but I just randomly e-mailed some guy from ebay after he took his decade off to ask him how much he'd sold it for.  He said he hadn't sold it and had decided to break it instead.  I dib dobs the head badge and brakes and was well chuffed.

I've been pretty bust of late so haven't really had time to do much up until this evening.  I've just sat for about 2 hours with some tin foil rubbing off the little spots of rust of the frame, forks and handle bars.  As a result I now have stained grey fingers tips and the skin on my thumb is peeling like a banana.  On the plus side i'm happy with the result.

Had to start doing something with it as I've just bought a GT Performer to restore aswell.  It hasn't arrived yet and the Mrs doesn't know about it.  It will go down slightly better now that she's seen me actually doing something with the other one I've already got  ;)  The performer is in a little bit worse a state than the decade rust wise so I've got some citric acid to do the bulk of the work for me.

Now then, regarding the dia-compe 128 levers.  If I wanted to have them repainted how would I take the pots and bits off?  Is it possible?  Is it worth it?

Just going to get the seat clamp, levers, tioga spider and calipers done again.  I went with the pro class to try and keep it closer to the orignial spec.  I really needed the Pro Class V's for that but couldn't find any.  You don't have some do you?
