Who Does A Build Parts List??

Is anyone as sad as me and prepares a build by creating a list of required parts?

I do mine on the computer at work. I use an Excel file with a series of columns. The first column is the part, frame/forks, bars etc, the 2nd column is type, so Patterson etc, the 3rd colour, vital for grips and hubs etc, the 4th is who/where in obtaining the part from, the 5th is how much the part costs, and the 4th consists of a blank cell if I've not sourced the part, or a green tick if I've sourced and paid for it. I even go to the detail of turning the cell that the green tick is in a dusky pink colour, until the part is in my man cave, then the cell goes white.

Is anyone else this sad thorough??

Always.......but my last 5 builds have all been identical so have been able to use the same one!!

Fookin detest excel so wouldn't go this route myself Dan but more power to you for being that organised.

More of a mental dreamer myself, its an organic process.
We sow the seed, nature grows the seed then we eat the seed....

It does help me to manage my funds better Ash, I usually try to span it out over 3 months.

I do the same as you re: grabbing stock, I just grab it from Alan's and Porkchop's stock.

Great idea on excel - May use that method for my next build

I have an idea in my head then buy everything ASAP at whatever the (normally extortionate) cost may be then take it all to Steve who in turn tells me nothing fits so I go and buy a load more (extortionate) crap and this cycle continues until finally I get something which looks vaguely familiar to my intended vision.

Easy.

Now, that's when it proves invaluable as I found out last year building the Kuwie and DP at the same time.

Na, when I open the door to the man cave and see 10 riders all stood there, I forget about the cash, I also think about how much I've pissed up the wall over the years, I forget about it then too.

I think if I went down your route Dan I'd be in the above position and horrified at the money I've spent to complete a build....so best not to start
I'd say most of my builds have been factory or rider specs so  I've found lists of parts already made... I then seem to memorise these and see which parts turn up and what my budget is each month... Some months I go mad, others I'll focus on the cheaper bits like chains, headsets, bolts, etc
Each to their own though mate... Part of the joy of a build is in the planning and being meticulous about what you want

I've got a Word doc I use like a check list. State which parts I need, maybe with a couple of options here and there, when I get the parts I just delete them. It helps me remember what I need as my builds take so bloody long and I've got more than one on the go.

I also use an Excel doc for parts bought and sold

Unfortunately I have to function this way or it feels like my world descends into chaos

i usually wait till i'm pissed then right down what i need on the back of a fag packet and what i think it might cost me. then the next day i throw the fag packet in the bucket when i realise i just bought some shite of ebay for too much money.
