Can you have too much chrome on a build?
« on: January 11, 2014, 09:03 PM »
okay I've got a lovely highly poished chrome frameset, a re-chromed set of single pinch 401 flight crank arms and a soon to be highly poished redline bubble font chainring.......

...the question is do I go for a chrome chain or just the usual metal coloured chain (both would be izumi)?

Would a chrome chain look good or would it be too blingy and a chrome overdose ?

my build's going to a homage rather than exact replica so it's down to my choice ( the bike I'm copying has a plain metal chain on it)

What are your thought's on such matters fellas?

cheers Ant

Personally Ant, I can't see any problem with a bike being too blingy, other than I doubt there is one member on here that had one that was like that BITD probably.   :-\

I quite like it though. 2 bikes that spring to mind are Joffs Robbo and Iain Willgas' DP GL+, both have loads of chrome and polished bits, and both look amazing IMO.  8)

Cheers Dan, personally I think it looks great on say a chrome trickstar but not on other builds.
I'm only asking cos at MK12 I remember that i heard a few people dissing some people's builds as being too flash with this kind of set up....

...I'll hunt down the build's you've mentioned and give 'em a squint ;)

any other thoughts lads? ::)

Kappy's chrome Trickstar is one of the nicest I've seen.

You can always tone it down with a padset if you think there's too much chrome.

And remember, for the same amount of people saying 'its too flash', there are probably twice as many saying 'its fooking awesome'.  :4_17_5:

Bud, you're the one who is going to spend the most time looking at it so build it to the spec that pleases you the most.

It's nice to have your builds appreciated by others particularly if it's a reflection of what you like. Take a look at Terry's, just finished, JMC Shadow for a great example of building to reflect your own taste.

I would suggest stopping at grips, seat and tyres  :D

Other than that, go for your life. Your bike, your rules and some people never have anything nice to say so screw em  :daumenhoch:

Cheers for all the positive comments lads :4_17_5:

I always build my bikes my way but I'm always open to hear the opinions of others (most of you far more experienced in building bikes than than me!) :daumenhoch:

I kmow what I'm like though....I'll probably buy both chains to see which I think looks best! :LolLolLolLol:

I prefer a painted bike myself but on the right build plenty of Chrome looks stunning.

Please only you though.

I built this Haro Group 1 from left over chrome parts. Sadly gone now, and for a steal I might add!

I think all chrome is ok.

I would try and keep the seat / grips / tyres the same colour as the colour on decals. I think that would look good that way  :daumenhoch:

Chrome rules  :daumenhoch:

...but I personally wouldn't polish the Redline Chainring... they only ever came in a brushed finish  ;)

I know what you mean about the chainring....unfortunately it was looking very tired and was in need of some TLC...I'm  hoping it'll look sweet on its return :daumenhoch:

A decent polishing/chromers outfit should be able to give ya a brushed finish mate... I had one done a few years back and it turned out perfect  :daumenhoch:

Cheers bud but I think it's too late and it's already been done....not to worry I've seen some builds with polished chainrings and although not era correct I do think they look good :daumenhoch:
