Can a complete Wheel be Powder Coated ???
« on: January 08, 2014, 12:18 AM »
Q,

Can a rim / spokes / nipples / hubs be powder coated ?

I've had a bit of a mishap whilst stripping the anno off an Araya Aero Rim...

Please help.

Thanks in eager anticipation

Eddie

It can be done, but shouldn't, worst case, strip the spokes out, powder the rim and rebuild with cleaned/replaced spokes and hub.

Damn :-\ ......how long did you leave it, just for the record?
any chance that could be polished /dremeled (?) out..? ...if it's not too deep, i mean, and that is the only spot on the rims.

Longer than a few minutes that's for sure !!   :D

:( Bloody shame that Eddie .  I always use caustic soda crystals , it only takes a few minutes (5/10) to strip a rim ...... in hindsight it's probably a good job you haven't as Caustic is stronger and you would probably have no rim left at all !!!

I reckon it could be sanded out and polished but it depends on how far the ovenpride has soaked in aswell ..... it can leave a veining effect even after sanding and polishing .

Note for future ...... don't leave in for too long and rinse off with loads of water after  :D

it may not be as bad as you think, give it a sand down and a polish to see if it,s left it looking peppered with small holes.

I think 36 hours...
It said overnight on box, but i went on to work on Saturday morning totally forgetting about it... :idiot2:

It came out of the bag like this...

A quick wash...

Then 4 hours of wire wool/wet&dry...

The whole rim is pitted...

Got a Dremmel to try tomorrow...
But it may be fooked...

Superbikedan wants to see if he can work some magic on it, but i'm waiting till i get another rim and can send then him over the 3 of them in case it doesn't powder coat too good...

yikes -- fingers crossed, and if Dan says nay, maybe the pits don't jump to the eye (..so much..) if you give the rims a brushed finish ......? ->http://www.radbmx.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,166650.0.html
...Just to minimize the damage .....

36 hours :LolLolLolLol:

   :crazy2:   :D

I find if you put the item in the bag and work on it with your fingers, it will speed the whole process. I recently done a spider and just put it in a tub and worked the liquid with a toothbrush. It took about 10 minutes to completely remove all the anno  :daumenhoch:

ooops :-\

If it makes you feel any better, i stripped the anno off some Ukai/Peregrine rims with Caustic soda...a weak mix.  I left them for about an hour, turning as i went and they still came out pitted.  Hours and hours spent polishing afterwards, and they are still a little pitted.

Live and learn. Should have got the Mrs to do it...They're pretty good at using products such as Oven Pride :Aresehole:

Sorry to see it damaged Eddie, it's easy to get distracted and forget about something, probably find a rim shaped ring on the block paving tomorrow where you washed it off , a few years back my dad sprayed the inside of the oven with Mr muscle oven cleaner , left it overnight and in the morning was cleaning the parts when he discovered daylight shining through into the back of the oven, after seeing that i've always used a good old fashioned brillo pad to clean my oven  :daumenhoch:
Mr muscle sprayed onto anodised items should remove coloured ano in about 15 minutes if you agitate it with a tooth brush (wear eye protection) and DON'T use your own toothbrush  :teef:
Rinse it well with lots of soapy water, hard anodise is a different matter, better off taking it to an anodisers and getting them to remove it for you.

You could be right John.

I got the dremmel onto it today for 30 mins and it smoothed out a great deal...

It's tomorrow's project...

Lads, reading through this and seeing the pics maybe you should try the costic hot, I've stripped loads of hubs, pedals rims etc and my trick is have a cold water tub next to the hot costic, what I do is use boiled water, pure it into the tub than add costic, give it a quick stir and place the item in the tub, it will fizz straight away and the anno will come off in seconds,
dip the item in the cold water then repeat again just holding it in the hot costic for a few more seconds and it will come out mint :daumenhoch:
