Tioga Beartrap 2 Headset
« on: January 05, 2014, 11:55 AM »
Morning chaps.

Just considering what headset to put on my '88 Master. Originally they came with a black YST one, but these are pretty hard to find.  I bought a cheapo black one for the FST, but it is pretty crappy, so i'm thinking of other options.

I have found a chrome Beartrap 2 for £24, and a chrome YST for £5. Does anyone have any experience, good or bad, or can suggest any decent alternatives? i'd like to keep the bike as factory as possible.

Thanks, Paul.

Definately a Beartrap for a rider. Been using one on my TA for a few years and have never had a problem.

Beartrap all the way.

Avoid YST and Odyssehite!

They're bloody rubbish!

Earlier bear trap 2's are nicer quality, An 88 version is Japan made and has a stamped Tioga top nut and under the nut is a rubber o-ring,  and chrome lock washer.
be careful when buying a second hand one though, check the headset hasn't been adjusted with the lock washer in place as it cuts a perfect thread in the tab making it useless.

New Tioga versions have a printed locknut, thinner washer, no rubber under the nut but the chrome is nice quality.
