1st EVER UK BMX freestyle competition,,,,,,,,
« on: January 04, 2014, 06:14 AM »
Hi My Name is Doug, I was one of the first BMX riders to use Harrow skatepark approx 34 years ago, and became friendly with Leon and Steve Casey who formed the NWTT ( north Wembley Trick Team) . I bought my very 1st BMX in San Jose California when I was 12 years old ( a Schwinn ) and after speaking to Bob Haro and Tim March was asked to be the 3rd Judge at the UK's first ever freestyle competition that was held at Harrow( I think it was 1981?) . There was a write up in BMX Action Bike magazine but I have long since lost my copy of it. I sadly broke my knee at the 1st big UK indoor race meet sponsored by Lee Cooper Jeans at pickets lock centre north London and never really got back in to BMX. I did ride lots at Rom Skatepark and track too where I used to hook up with Jamie Vince now and again.
My last BMX was stolen from my pick up truck when I was 18 on the day of Live aid (1984 I believe) it was a tioga Rhino 3 frame, Jeff Bottema skatepark forks, hutch titanium headlock with pro vector bars, mx 1000's , sun tour beartraps and ACS Z rims,Would love to try and rebuild it, but it may be a tough one to find parts for.
Anyway , big hello to all will try to find some pics of me in the day.......

Welcome aboard Doug  :daumenhoch:

I had my bike stolen in the early 90s ... never leaves you does it!

Hey bro, welcome to Rad, the only real Uk based BMX forum  :coolsmiley:

You have a serious bit of history in BMX just in that little snip-it, its a shame about your knee bringing it to a halt back then.

I would love to see a replica of your old bike built from back then too. Finding the fork will be a tad hard but actually getting hold of one will be very hard. Expect to pay big for them as they are very sought after and a 'specialist' item these days. Same goes for the titanium headlock. The rest shouldn't be too difficult though.

Thanks for all your messages! I think I went on a forum about 18 months ago while I was away filming on Fast 6 but it wasn't this one, I have a well paid job so can probably stretch to buying the right parts, if they ever turn up, got a few work colleagues in the USA so will scour over there too.
I think the last race I won was an open national on the Isle of Wight when I was 16..........31 years ago! Ha ha
We used to bunk over the fence at Harrow skate park after the skaters went home, it all got a bit nasty and came to blows as BMX got bigger and skating was on the decline, eventually the fences got removed( no idea by who? Ha ha) then when Harrow council bulldozed the site( filled in the Pnut , the walk off and filled the performance and the pool, certain BMX ers who I can't for the life of me remember who :coolsmiley:) sabotaged the dozer and the park got left allone after that, not been there for 20 years so I hope it's sill there?
