Collar inside MRD Badlander forks

There appears to be a collar of some sort inside the forks on my Badlander that stops the stem from going right into the forks.  Any ideas?  They haven't been repaired and the "collar" seems to be in fairly snugly.  Do I attack it with a large hammer and drift?

looks like a piece of cut up seatpost has been rammed in there, is there anything stopping it from coming out the bottom of the forks? if not, get an old straight seatpost in there and try hammer it out.

are you sure these forks havent been repaired  ..... and repainted/powdered ?

at a guess i would say they may have had a new steer tube welded

in and a joiner piece has been fitted to strengthen joint

Yep, looks to be the case.  I'd never even noticed when I changed the headset out......... plenty of grease   Reckon you can sort them out?  I hate bodges.......

   Its slowly becoming my second nemesis after the TA...........  Its not going to beat me though, just something else to get sorted.  I have a feeling I shall making Phil's acquaintance in the near future.......

Bert do you know the internal measurement of the normal steerer tube? I have a drill bit which may do the job. I bought it to ream out the internal taper on a set of forks i wanted to run a linear bearing on for a woody style brake mod. 

The forks were 21mm ish at the top but tapered to around 19.5mm where it met the top of the forks

Internal diameter is 21mm.  I'll post a couple of pics when I get chance. 

I think that they need breaking apart and re doing correctly as it looks as though they've been badly welded to the sleeve and the welds filed down.  I'd rather they were butt welded properly and then the excess spun down on a lathe or preferably a new steerer tube fitted.  I've not got the gear for doing it myself these days so I think i'll need to box em up and send them to someone who can.......  Noticed a hairline crack on my DP seat post as well so might as well get that sorted at the same time.

Yep, PM already sent to Phil.  Hopefully he can perform minor miracles....... Then off to SBD for new powder.  I'm thinking grey and black........
