GT Pro Performer help, please?
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:57 PM »
Hi,

I'm new to the site and have just bought a '85 GT Pro Performer FF to build up and being a little wet behind the ears to all things not 'Burner' maybe someone could answer the following questions?

I want to build the bike with era correct parts but am not sure what style of parts I should fit in certain places.

What DC brake levers and caliper models would've been used circa '85?  900s? 901s? Tech 3s? Tech 4s?

Also, what GT seat clamp style was correct? I've seen some that look a little hexagonal in shape,  like a large machined 'nut' and others which are like a recessed band with holes machines in round the circumference. What would be correct?

Many thanks.

Andy

Am I correct in saying that these bikes were often bought as a bare frame and forts when new and then owners put their own choice of hardware on them?

Looking through the BMXmuseum there seems to be a plethora of differing hardware specs.

Is it a case of anything goes as long as it;s quality and era correct?

For example, some of the literature I've seen shows them new with SR chainrings, yet many have Tuf-Necks, Suginos, GTs etc...

Both I would say.

In short, its your bike build it how you want.

That's cool, but being new to this, I'd hate to build a lemon that was worth less in the future if I ever decided to sell it because I'd put the 'wrong' bits on.

I'm on a steep learning curve!  "help"

Cheers.

Sor far I've got the F&F, a NOS set of GT Performer bars and a NOS GT Layback.

White Tuff IIs are a dead cert, as is a Kashi Aero - albeit a new one.

'Most' of the Pro GTs seem to have front loader GT stems which seems reasonable.

So really, the items up for discussion are:-

Brake levers,
Brake calipers,
Crank
Chain ring.
Grips
Seat post clamp

The crank is pretty easy as  the Cr-Mo OPC are fairly generic between brands from what I can see, whether they be Sugino, SR etc.

So really we're talking about the rest of the list.

Some seem to have the 1000's but weren't they superseded by '85?

Here's a question, are the modern reproduction MX1000 brake sets and Tech 3's frowned upon for not being the real '80's deal, or are the accepted and embraced?

Here's my 85 World Tour. Some bits are a bit either way age wise but it's built how I want it and I don't care what anybody else thinks! "nono"

Lovely bikes chaps. I hope mine turns out anywhere near as nice.  8)

My plan is chrome post/bars, white frame/forks/tuffs and black/white/chrome everything else.

Well that's the brake calipers sorted - just scored a NOS set of MX1000s

I also stumbled across a NOS 'Hollow' SR Cr-Mo OPC, all stamped up and perfect. :)

Been looking around and the GT seems to be a bike that attracts BITSA builds, which is cool I guess.

As long as it's all good stuff. :)

Over the moon with the hollow crank.
