Stripping and Polishing - How To??

Guys,

Currently have a chaindisc lying in some ovenpride.

Apparently this will strip it but how do I clean up and polish?!?

I wouldn't leave it lying too long, it will probably dissolve aluminium alloy eventually.
Great for taking off the anodised layer, I just did a set of mountainbike bars the other day.

After that I used 240 then 800 then 1500 grade wet & dry paper (plus detergent) to sand out most scratches (some were too deep).
Then I polished them with Autosol polish, then finally a shine with Autoglym resin Polish. To be honest they looked just as good after the Autosol.

With a flat surface like a chaindisc, I wrap the wet & dry paper round a flat object like a block of wood so that I don't sand out any troughs.
Saying that, be careful not to just sand the whole surface down to the lowest level or you could lose detail - I got carried away sanding a Tuf-Neck disc and lost most of the Tiger logo.
A bit of woodblock sanding plus some careful hand sanding is best.

Checked it this morning and it doesn't seem to have removed the paint?

if it is paint, caustic based products wont work, you need nitromors.

if it is deffo anno, use caustic soda for a bit more oomph.

but take all the usual safety precautions

It's a Greend TuffNeck.

So what should I do?  Nitromorse then scrap off and sand?  Any fancy tools I need?

is it green anno or paint,if its anno then caustic will do the trick,are you close to chandlers ford if you are you can always pop in and i will show you how to strip & polish alloy,heres one i did earlier

Would be good to see how its done for future reference but not sure how far you are from me, Chandlers Ford does ring a bell!!

Can you post some instructions in the mean time so I can give it a go?  I'd appreciate it!!

if its a green tuff neck its paint.


put a good coat of nitromors on it , leave it for 1/2 hour then jetwash it off....

then polish it. you shouldnt need to sand it really.

Where abouts in Chandlers ford are you Sawzall? Is there much going on round your way, i have seen a chrome CW flyer with blak skyways chained up outside Mono in town a few times but not much esle.

......right, Nitro'd the chainwheel and have removed all of the paint (there seems to be a bit of pitting, did I leave it on too long or was it just under the paint?)

Shall I just polish her up now?  What do you use?  A cutting polish?

the pitting will be from the caustic soda, if there was scratches in the paint, the caustic will have sneaked through and attacked the anno.

same thing happened to me with a chainring that was laquered red.

i would probably use proggressively finer grades of wet and dry to get out the pitting then autosol cuting paste, then peek,

if its for a show bike. if not just give it a go over with the autosol.
