Snapping off welded Frame Cable Guides?
« on: August 08, 2006, 09:27 AM »
Guys,

I have a mtb that I'm trying to fit with a child seat!

There is a double cable guide (of which only one is used) that sits on the downtube.  Its exactly where the child seat bracket has to fit.  Anyone know how to snap it off without funking up the new paintwork?

Thanks
Stace  :daumenhoch:

I would be more inclined to cut it off carefully rather than trying to "snap it off". This would probably be best done with a hacksaw, or maybe a cutting tool such as a Dremmel or a well controlled angle grinder, although you could get carried away with the latter. Depending on the material of the frame you will need to excercise great caution. Alluminum will cut considerably easier than steel, and any slip could be devasting. If you do decide to cut it off, perhaps you ought to cut it proud and spend some time filing it down as this will be more controlled. My experience of using angle grinders on alluminium is that the blade often "grabs" the metal and I would not recommoned doing this.

use a dremel if you have one, and do it slowly.
