My headset appears to loosen ( the round bit with grippy edge ) - keeps coming loose.

I would hazard a guess that that crown race should b on the forks and ur bearings look like they r in upside down  :daumenhoch:

That bit in your hand looks like the fork crown race, there may already be one on your forks?

If not it slides over the fork steerer the opposite way up to how you're holding it in the pic, the bearing race faces upwards

The bearings should be fitted with the cages in the cups and the balls (ooh err) facing outwards

If the top nut is tightened all the way down in the first pic you'll need a washer below it to keep the adjuster tight it'll never stay tight if there's a gap
2 minutes turkish...

As per above  :daumenhoch:

Here's an exploded view of one (yours probably won't have the 'seal' bit):

I do have the washer pictured above - but if I remember correctly it sits snug within the cerrated adjustable race part of my headset .  The diameter is smaller and fits on like a glove.

Surely because its ' inside ' this piece - it's not doing anything ?

Cant take any pics - as I'm at work unfortunately

Cheers addy

Beartrap headset then? Yeah the toothed washer slots down on top into a recess on the adjustable race. What it does is stop your headset loosening over time.

Not too sure what it is bought at MK13.

But you've described it spot on Dannywhac....

Ok so why is the adjustable race still loose ?

Should I buy an extra washer, larger in diameter to sit on top of this - to stop it moving ?

Tad confused

It doesn't look like a bear trap 2. If it is you have 2 washers missing, one with the all important teeth that lock into the upper adjustable race. You're best off taking it all off and take a pic of all the pieces plus the bottom of your fork shaft and we'll talk you through it :daumenhoch:

i know what your saying pickle and tried that - but as you can see from photos - it just didnt ' sit ' at all right and was clunky.

i have since tried it the way as in diagram and all is absolutely fine, ill post some piccies.

showing clunkiness

showing forks as they are

with bearings on

this is what it is set up at the moment - and seems to be all snug as a bug.

this piece does look like the crown race - but it seems to be doing the trick as the washer ?

OR AM I JUST A TOTAL FOOL  ;D

please let me know your thoughts / feelings - I am off to rom skatepark on this tomorrow >>>!!!   ???   !!!

Right fella...take it all apart and have a look at your forks to start with. They should look like this....

That spare bit in your hands should be on your forks, as in my photo, is there one on yours?

It shouldn't be on there it is a fork crown. All headsets come with one and your forks may already have one fitted, therefore it is a spare part.

I think - there was a piece missing....when it was sent to me  ?

but this ' remedy ' seems to be working a treat - with the adjustable race not becoming loose as before....

....and if i dont get out riding this weekend - i will cry.

i know it doesnt look right - but it will get me out on the road / skatepark and enjoying the bike - until i buy a new one.......

waddya reckon ?

+1, stick it in a drawer, you don't need it.
