S&M 1" Dirtbike Serial Database Project
« on: August 01, 2013, 04:30 PM »
I always thought (as did a lot of people) that 1"  S&M Dirtbike serial numbers had little to no relevance on the year that they were produced. There's a hell of a lot of them out there that don't have their original decals, and because of that they have to be put in a bit of a random post-'90/pre-'94 and '94-'95 time-line.

After having a bit of a chat with Ryan P, it seems that when he and Alex (Leech) were researching the S&M DB decal time-line that certain serials corresponding with certain original decals were bunched together. If this pans out to be the case, then it would mean that owners of 1"  unstickered/re-finished DB's would finally be able to work out the year their frame was produced.

Basically what I'm up to is creating a database for all those 1991-1995 1"  original decaled S&M DB's so we can work out a time-line for the re-finished frames by serial number.

I need your help for this, and it would be great (and I'd be eternally grateful) if you could either post up your information here, or email it to me at:

dannywhack@gmail.com

Just to let you know, all your info (unless it's posted by you here) will remain private and won't be shared with anyone – only the results of serial ranges (if it goes according to plan) will eventually be posted up once I get enough info to be able to define DB years by serial. If you still don't want to reveal your complete serial number on the frame, just the first two numbers should do – ie – SMD 74XX.

Right – after all that blurb, here's some more. In an ideal world, I'd need the following details below. I realise that everyone's busy and ain't got time to photograph/measure everything, but as a bare minimum (in order to make this work) I'd need your serial number and original sticker set type – the rest is gravy! ;)

Here's the list of info needed (items in bold are required, rest is optional) if you can add pictures that'd also be great, but not essential:

Original Decal set type
Serial Number
Rear Dropout: solid/double plate and welded outside only or welded inside and outside
Seatstay Bridge: round/single solid fat plate/double plate
Chainstay Bridge: round/double plate/single thin plate
Seatstays: tubing width

Here's some rough examples of what I'm after (again, if you ain't got time to add/send me pictures no worries, just the info would do):

Overall frame pic (ignore the downtube decals in this shot, they're repops):

Serial Number:

Rear Dropout (Double Plate):

Rear Dropout (Solid Plate):

Seatstay Bridge (Double Plate):

Seatstay Bridge (Solid Plate):

Chainstay Bridge (Single Thin Plate):

Chainstay Bridge (Round):

Seatstay Width:

Rear Drops Welded Outside Only (Pic of the inside of drop):

Rear Drops Welded Both Inside and Outside (Pic of the inside of drop:

Again, huge thanks for having the patience to read this, and let me say again all your info will remain private if you like, and photo's aren't necessary – just the info. Oh, and if you've got any suggestions, suggest away (apart from 'give up') :)

Cheers in advance,

Dan.

All og 'dookie' stickered Dirtbike SMD 4592

One piece solid drops, welds on both sides, round seat stay bridge, flat seat stay bridge (double plate)

No 990 brake mounts or cable hole in the seat tube (they haven't been ground off)

The pitchforks that came with it are double plate sandwiched dropouts leading me to believe it's an early mk2 frame

;D Could do Griff, but the dates would be +/- 100 years, and as the 90's was only a decade......  :LolLolLolLol:

Hi -

My frame is as follows:

Original Decal set type:  If I remember correctly they were like the ones on the chrome one on your post with a shovel in the seat tube.
Serial Number: SMD4222 (on outside of RH drop out)
Rear Dropout: solid plate and welded inside and outside
Seatstay Bridge: single solid fat plate
Chainstay Bridge: round
Seatstays: tubing width 19mm / 3/4"

Any ideas on the age?

I don't know if you can help but I am after a set of pitchforks for it, condition doesn't have to be NOS or anything like that as I want them to match the frames age nicely.

Thanks for the help and advice recently Dan, my DB is nearly all back together with the addition of the pitch forks from the captain, I need a seat still though.

I'm still looking for my dirtbike frame, pitch forks, s&m crank arms and seat-post I sent off to be sprayed yellow, I got a text to say it was all done and ready and then nothing? I tried to ring the guy, suppose to be called "Davey", suppose to live just outside York, supposed to just have painted a "Hillman Imp" the same yellow as my dirtbike, his phone is not working anymore.
By reading this post on the dirtbike frame numbers, I remember having my dirtbike marked by the police along with the rest of my familys bikes, the police guy commented about how small the dirtbike's frame number was, now I'm on a mission to find these sheets, because it has my dirtbike's frame number on it..
Then I can join this discussion with my frame number, but sadly still no dirtbike?

Cheers everyone for the extra info :4_17_5:

John - there's my frappage for the evening, mid-school porn yum yum etc  :daumenhoch: Even like the way you've set up that first picture like it's a peekaboo  :LolLolLolLol:

The Brumster - that's the third platty DB I've heard of in the UK - if it's not a lot of trouble could you pop me a pm or post on the history behind it - reason I ask is cos I spent a fook load of time trying to track one down that a mate owned back in the 90's and wondered if it had ended up in capable hands here on RAD :)

Not massively far fella - I got a few submissions, but not enough to make any conclusions yet. Sadly over on The Museum (where there's a shed load more og decaled frames) I think I fell foul of not being in the clique enough to get more stuff...

That said, you've reminded me about this  :daumenhoch: Will restart it again I reckon and fingers crossed will get a few more. I do have a bit more info from stuff I've picked up, including the Platform DB that I've nearly finished :)

Niiiice! That F&F's a cracker - the downtube deecs are og - they first came out late '92, and with the solid drops of the frame I reckon it's a '93 - the Lowrider/Cholo decals ran alongside the Dookie decals :)
