1980's grifter gary Morgan
« on: August 01, 2013, 08:23 AM »
Hi I'm looking to find out some information on my dad. Gary Morgan from Blackpool we now reside in Australia. I am wanting to get him a grifter for Xmas as a surprise as he won a British national on one back in 84. He is also apparently in an issue of bmx action magazine. If anyone knows where I can get a copy that would be great. Also looking for a decent grifter to ship here and pair as it was when he won. Any pictures you may have will be greatly appreciated.

Something rang a bell reading this so I had a look through my action bike magazines and found this article, it's from BMX Action Bike November 1984 and shows your dads' Grifter, looked like a pretty unique set up  8). As for buying one now I guess ebay is your best bet. Hope this helps  :)

Great info that guys, thanks  :daumenhoch:

The mag fails to disclose that the frame has been heavily modded though. The seat mast has ben narrowed at the top, the seat stays have been lowered, a brace has been fitted around the seat stays and seat mast and it looks like, Torker drops, have been added too. That's just the rear. I would to see thw whole frame if someone has a pic as the headtube on the Grifter was well long.

Thats not a genuine Grifter. There is no way it could sit in the stand like that  :D

It must have taken 3 people to lift it FFS  ;D

Thanks for all the info. I have been watching eBay UK closely. Biggest problem is rust. Mums traveling there soon and will bring it back in a bike bag. However need something not rusted up. Will be difficult to find one I think. Any pics or even a hard copy of the mag would be an amazing find.

.. really, all rusty? Well, if you're doin a dad tribute (..!), would'nt you'd have to get it sprayed anyway....? - would be a cool thing to build it up together with ya dad, dunno if that works with your plans ....  :) . But then some rust wouldn't be that much of an issue...   just an idea, in case you don't find a clean one.

Good luck with the mag search. Maybe SOMEBODY here at least has a link to a SCAN of, as stidds mentioned: "... BMX Action Bike, November 1984. ..."  ??? I'll have a look as well.

Not all rusty but has to be clean as customs in Australia won't let any nastys in! If I can get one to aus I can then figure out what I can do with it. Most likely be a project but if I can get it close to complete that would be ace. Thanks I've been scouting eBay for mags as well.

Just tell/ask the seller to clean it for you ... tell him your problem, peeps are often helpful..  :)

i think this is the sort of chainring/sprocket you'd be looking for:
Tuf Neck Power Gear   -rather than a Redline one, i believe, judging from the track pics-
...they have like 43T (teeth), or 44 or 42, 45 .....

an example on ebay today  -89 bucks, dont know how steep that is-:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Tuf-Neck-Power-Gear-Old-School-BMX-Sprocket-Redline-Black-44-T/290803687920?rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D163%26meid%3D305397250917837807%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1088%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D141025776881%26

test OUR sale section by using our search function ... if you think its interesting for your quest, you might want to consider getting a 'site support tag' for a fair lil fee, ... again, just an idea.

sorry, can't find a scan of issue youre lookin for:
i hoped to find it here; but its just the cover so far of the nov84 issue ... http://www.23mag.com/mags/bab/bab.htm

right...   -Deffo sounds like a 'project' now; Terry's absolutely right-
Funmonster said. "...If i remeber right he told me it was a GT rear end he had cobbled onto a grifter front triangle.."

... that would be a GT Pro (?) then or smth like that ..... probably prohibitively expensive for you?:
-you'll prolly pay 200 $ for such a (donor) frame, in order to tear its stays off... :crazy2:

-THen you need a specialist who could do the welding.  :smiley6600: (although this could be part of the shared project already, of course)

-Also pictures.....Man-dy - your dad must have a pic of his old bike he won his title on surely .....?  :coolsmiley:
With that we could at least help you id the parts

Mandy, have you tried any of the Oz bmx sites like Ozbmx?  Plenty of us poms on there and you never know one may have brought one over when they moved.  Where in Oz are you?

I have a few pics of the bike. He actually got the bike stock in 1979 for Xmas. I'm happy to keep it stock and not make any changes. He has owned two between 1979 -late 80's. he left the bike frame back in England but its been stolen since being here. (Very gutted he didn't bring it) I'm unsure as to time frame of having someone back in the UK. I've been on bike oz site recommended to me but nothing on there so far. Ill need a bike delivered to Blackpool or within and hour or so dive out of Blackpool. (Don't want to push my luck with my friend doing me a favour) any help from you guys is greatly appreciated. I'm scouting eBay everyday. Some people want 40pounds delivery to Blackpool so I'd rather save on the $$$ there and put it towards a pait job etc.
