rear axle removal

i presume im correct in thinking i have to remove the freewheel (with the correct tool  ) in order to
get the rear axle out ??

or do you undo the opposite side to the freewheel and slide it out ? prob a silly question to most but if ya dont know ya dont know

You can do it either way actually, but it is always easier with the freewheel off.

Depends on hub, most old schoolers are, as Stidds says, but I have some mid sealed hubs that are only do-able non drive side unless the freewheel is off, it is a 14mm axle, small thread freewheel though.
