i presume im correct in thinking i have to remove the freewheel (with the correct tool  ::) ) in order to
get the rear axle out ??

or do you undo the opposite side to the freewheel and slide it out ? prob a silly question to most but if ya dont know ya dont know  :'(

You can do it either way actually, but it is always easier with the freewheel off.

Depends on hub, most old schoolers are, as Stidds says, but I have some mid sealed hubs that are only do-able non drive side unless the freewheel is off, it is a 14mm axle, small thread freewheel though.

Pics, or more info may help with a definative answer!!
