Softening up NOS tyres that have dried out Any ideas?
« on: April 24, 2013, 10:35 AM »
Hi Ive just had delivered some nos tyres & they are a little stiff ( I guess they have dried our over time) is there any way to clean & then soften them up ? Ive wiped them down & sprayed them with wd40 but i was wondering id these was a recommended or tired & tested way to try to back some elasticity (maybe soaking them in oil etc) I've heard that diesel might be used to do this ????

Really have not got a clue ? Any ideas????? Cheers  :daumenhoch:

A little Vaseline on the sidewalls should make them more supple :daumenhoch:

If they're black tyres then use tyre dressing. It really helps the tyres to get more supple.

Ok boys cheers for this yes they are black tyres IRC Freestyle .

Theres a a white residue on the tyres Im assuming this is coming out of the tyre ? Any idea whats the best thing to clean this off ? Ive tried a bit of soapy water but it doesn't seem to be having a great effect although its shifted some of this ?

Turns out that they weren't really dry at all,

Thought the best thing would be to get the tyres mounted on a wheel, get a little air in them. I've wiped them down & they are looking really good , needs a little more work but i think they will be stonking !!!

I use the tyre gels from halfords.   Put loads on and it does help.

just be careful how soft you make them if your going to ride on them as a softer compound will grip well but wear out quickly  :daumenhoch:
