Author Topic: Removing grips without damaging them or the bars ??? (Read 2450 times)

Ok , bit of a novice thing to be asking but i wondered if anyone had a reasonable way to do this?

Back in the day we used some WD & slid a kitchen Knife down the grip to enable the oil to loosen the grip from the bars with varying degrees of success injuries & damage caused to the both grips bars ourselves & any unfortunate passers by......

I need to remove some grips from my bars as I think I'm adding some tech 6 levers which need to slide on so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take bars off.dip the grips in hot water one at a time and with your fingers stretch the hole so as much water gets down as poss.Take out of water and wrestle off with tea towel.It works,done it a few times

Hairspray

Spray it in and work it down and they will slide off

Use it 2 fit aswell cos it evaporates and lightly sticks the the grips 2 bars

U should have seen my misses face when I bought a can

Feed WD40 or straw down between bar and grip.

Squirt, feed and twist the grip should come off no problem.

i use a lolly stick,work it down the grip with washing up liquid,then move your way around grip

repeating the process and it should slide off

I stopped using the hairspray on anything I'm going to ride after grips worked loose on a wet day on MTB.

Very thin flat head screwdriver, I wrap it in masking tape to avoid scratching. Push it all the way down, slide the WD40 straw next to it and spray, the WD makes its way around in seconds and the grip slides off - viola!

i remember once stripping an old bike in the garage with a cuppa on the go , got to this stage , took a sip , pulled the flange so the grip came off the bar a little and spat my sip of tea down the gap and worked one off . repeated for other side

tea does not degrade your rubbers like all the nasty chemicals these other folk use

The only way to get them off in a way which causes no problems with re installation is to man up and wrestle them off. The bars need to be on the bike still for maximum leverage. You may need to grimace and shout during removal, most importantly, you need to be a man and not a girl. If you introduce any fluids, they might come off easier, but they never stay put when replaced.

I have used a quick squirt of brake cleaner to fit grips recently. It evaporates and doesn't leave anything nasty behind.
This might not be a good idea on painted bars and there is the chance it could make the grip go a bit funny depending on what they are made of. It was fine on chrome bars and rubber grips I put on my daughters MTB.

defo agree with the posts above about hot water. dip the bar end into a vase of the hot stuff and it will soften the grips up and make them far easier to remove. Once cold and dry they are as good as new....

Brake cleaner is basically thinners dude!I wouldn't use that!
