Can anyone tell me why they laced differently ?

Picked a bike up the other week and the front is not the same as the rear , they are both the og wheels with 48 spokes

The front was laced as a radial and the rear in a typical cross format, not entirely sure why though as it was a freestyler?  I was always under the impression that doing it that way was built for race?

Radial laced rears tend to be pretty flimsy hence lots of modern bikes have the same lacing combo as yours.
