Ukai Speedlines...
« on: February 20, 2013, 11:35 AM »
Can anyone tell me when they first came into the BMX fray??

I will use them on my '81 build but I think they were mid/late '82 release??

Terry - to the best of my knowledge you're safe putting them on a 81 build. I'm sure Kuwahara fitted Speedlines to their 81 KZ-1s.  Some folk have them on their 1980 builds but I think they should be box rims.

But the advert says "81 Champion" and they 100% came on 81 KZ1s

I'm confused as to how the ad makes it definitive? They advertise the Volkswagon Golf every year you know....

Agree, the add does state Scott Clark NBA Champion in 1981, however the add seems to have first appeared sometime in 1982 and states NEW dual lines. But I guess its possible they were first introduced at the end of 1981? When did the 81 KZ1 come out?

Well i've looked and I can conclusively say that I can't pin a date to when they were released  :D

I've got shop spec sheets etc and precisely none of them are dated!  I do have a couple of early 81 ads which don't specify anymore than 'side shined' UKAI rims but looking at the pictures I can't spot the telltale speed line cut into the rim.  Based on all that malarkey it's looking like 1982 is highly likely  :-[

PS. I'm not really embarrassed - i'm too old for that  ;D

Those mag links are excellent. I was browsing through them last night.

Does anyone know of a similar site that might have the October 1980 and November 1980 BMX Action scans?

The ads in mags are not really solid enough to go off.

After looking at some Thruster stuff i discovered (as an example) some ads were printed up to 1 or even 2 years after photos were taken!

Anyone tell me when Araya 7x were released.....?

I would have thought the UKAI's would have been similar and ive got a pair of 7x's down to 1980 on a pro riders bike spec sheet the other day (fookin' lost it now though)!

Try these. Just click the mag you want and it will open to PDF  :daumenhoch:

Yeah sorry Terry I should have been clearer. They don't have those two issues (yet?). Just wondered if there were any other similar sites with slightly different scans.
