Well this has been in the works for about a year and is finally complete. I've been thinking about this project for more or less all the time i've been collecting.
I'm sure most have you have seen the Vans ad with Rick Allison riding his modified Trick Star which was put together when Rick went over to Dan Hanebrink's workshop in Big Bear CA back in 87/88. And some of you will know that Rick snapped the frame and threw it into the garbage.
Well i thought it was about time someone recreated it.
Not many pictures seem to exist of the original bike so it has been a lot of work getting this right and i think it came out pretty good.
Massive thanks has to go out to so many people who had an input and who helped make this happen…
Phil (sawzall) is the man who put the frame together from a damaged US Trick Star i picked up on BMXMuseum. There was a hell of a lot of conversations about this and i'm sure i must have got on his nerves a bit, but he really went the extra mile and produced some amazing work. The rear end had to be removed and rebuilt and canti brake mounts, and guides for the cables added
SuperBikeDan for the paintwork and putting up with me toing and froing trying to get the colour right
Del for the decals. Rick made the decals himself bitd so we had to recreate them as best we could .. Del managed to put them altogether and finish the bike off a treat.
Rick Allison. Rick has been amazing thoughout the last year with his input into this project. He gave me a few pics that i hadn't seen before and helped me figure out a few of the last parts. He also hand wrote the "Trick Star" and his signature as they were bitd for the decals.
Few other members who helped me with parts, info and their time..
Ernie (RL rider) - Trick Star donor frame
Jai (SE-bmxer) - NOS TS II forks
Gaz Poolysheriff - NOS Hutch Bad Bars
Dannyd - NOS Hutch Hi-Caliber seat- sent to me FOC .. Thanks a LOT :-)
Diablo .. Thanks Ryan you were so kind sending me those bits i really appreciate it
Costa for some detailing
Firebird Steve for helping Sawzall work out the dimensions of the frame
Pete Quad and Bubbs for trawling through old mags trying to find pics … they didn't find any but thanks anyways
Sorry if i missed anyone.. i bought all the other parts here and over on Museum but its been so long on the go now i've lost track .. so if you helped out a big thanks to you too.
I wanted to build the bike as close to its original condition as i could so i chose the pic of Rick surrounded by kids. This video on youtube...
shows Rick on the bike around the same time with the only difference being blue bars in place of chrome. I have both bars here but chose to stick with chrome as in the pic.
The pic for the vans ad looks as if it was taken towards the end of the life of the TS with the frame wearing a traditional Hutch down tube decal as well as other randoms. tires had also been changed as had the pedals (Hutch in place of the original Shimanos).
The modifications to the frame were made with 4130 Chromoly tubing.
Drop outs were shaped from the original Trick Star and still bare the original US serial number.
Check my photo bucket for loads more pics including each stage of the frame mods -
