Do they have to be laced 4 cross with this combo as i took them to a wheel builder and said they were too long, he tried doing them 3 cross.

Yes, 4 cross is just as easy to do. If you can find a wheel to copy it'd help
I did my first one 4 cross, and they all are now, even the 24" wheels.
