9T freecoaster on a 1986 Haro FST?
« on: January 26, 2013, 07:42 AM »
Hi

I am just middle on getting the bike made and I need to know if a 9T cog freecoaster would work? It will have a Profile 3 piece crank and adaptor with a spider and old school chainwheel and chain. I don't have a chain yet. If it wouldn't work, is there anyway to make it,different chain and chainwheel?

Thanks for any help, its all very confusing getting back into bikes :D

Thanks  :)

The issue you'll have is the haro will have 10mm dropouts and the freecoaster will be 14mm.

Other than that it would be fine.

That's cool then, the other thing to bare in mind is that you will need to use a small front sprocket so your gearing is OK to ride with

It will be fine buddy. Skyway do a 9T freewheel rear wheel now, if you wanted to go that way too  :coolsmiley:

You will, however, need to reduce the front chainring size to roughly 25T or you will struggle to get anywhere. 9T rear, 25T front is roughly equivalent to 16T rear and 44T front  :daumenhoch:

Thanks for all the info :)

Think I will leave it, I don't like the idea of a small chainwheel on an old school build :) I will have to look out for an older freecoaster hub.

Can't you just change the 9t for something more old school friendly?

Yup,you should be able to put a 16t sprocket on the freecoaster :daumenhoch:

I went theugh this fully with my Badlander when I built it and found that a 9T drive caused the chain to hit the frame. I put an oldschool shark chaingaurd on and it worked a treat with a 25T front cog. Porkchop makes repro snowflake chainwheels down to 25T and they look awesome. I have a blue one up for grabs if you want to try it as i'm running a 28/10 gearing now.

If you want to run an oldschool look drop down to 36/13 as once again you can get 36 or 35T chainrings to fit a standard 110mm bolt centre spider or powerdisc. Look in the me and my bikes section at my latest bike, my white Retrogoose and see.

If you truely want to keep it oldschool then don't forget early Shimano cassette hubs ran down to 14T and the late 70's Geese had these with a 39T chainring. My Badlander is now running 39/14 and it looks awesome.

I will post pics up later but i'm on my phone so can't right now. Hope it helps though mate and welcome back to BMX.

What freecoaster are you using? As you can get sprockets for them. Most freecoasters from the 80's and 90's used the same sprockets as sturmey archer hubs.  :daumenhoch:

I got a 16t from Billy's BMX shop in cambridge.

you wont be able to just swap the cog if its 9T as it will be a one piece driver, you will need to change it to a 2pc driver plus the cog of your choice, if one is available, if not then you will have to leave the 9t and put a 25T up front as has been suggested.
What hub is it?
Whats the matter Kid, don't ya like clowns? Don't we make you laugh? Aint we fukkin funny?

thanks for all the info :) its a cheap no make hub and wheel as far as I can see. Think I will leave it I haven't even got the bike yet! Most of the parts were donated for my build so don't want to swapping chainwheel etc. I think I will look out for an old freecoaster hub if I think I will be able to do any old school tricks once I get it :LolLolLolLol:
