Nice to meet you last night...

So I'll put my bikes story in writing so you have it.

In 1990 I was riding a Burner that I'd painted in black hammerite and it was pretty dead, no brakes, I'd gone over the bonnet of a Fiesta on the way to scouts on it once due to this.  A friend I sailed with said he'd got a nice bike and would I like to buy it...  I asked if I could borrow it while I persuaded my old dears to hand over £35 quid.  Back then they didn't have £3.50 so it was never going to happen but I got to ride it for a few weeks.

Anyways - after a while he had it back and that was that....

About 6 months later I was at the Sailing Centre at Babbs Mill and he came down - I think he just wanted a pint or somet so he said I could have it for £5.... needless to say I had it.

Back then it has Red Skyways, Green Tyres, Red MX Brakes with Green Cables a few of the stickers on it and a lay back seat post.

Over the years until I could drive I used it religiously, eventually ditching the front Skyway when the bearings broke, my brother used it for a bit in the late 90's and it has survived several theft attempts.  Since about 2001 it's sat in my parents back garden rusting away.

In about 2006/7 I was bored so pulled it out, cleaned it up and got some new bits so I could use it again and then joined this place - I didn't even know what it was but the guy down at the Cycle Shop in Washwood Heath used to call it the Totally Radical Machine when I took it to him.

The dent in the back stay has been there since I got it and it has the original forks.

It's survived another theft attempt since I got it back out and as such it sits in my garage with a motorcycle lock around it..........  I wont ever sell it as it's a great piece of my own personal history, I'm going to put it on the wall at some point when I live in a gated mansion LOL

Cheers

Jake

PS - I'm 32 and have owned the bike for 22 years

Is he still open??

I went passed late last year as I needed a 12inch rear wheel but the shutters were down.

I told him about this place and he was kicking him self, said he threw away shit loads of Retro stuff in the mid 90's...

Ahh well.

Little update

I have been in conversation with

Steve Fletcher (stechford cycles manager 1982-86)

             &

Derrick Owens  ( 1984 NBMX champion on a TRM, (see pic)

Both have shown a real interest in tracing the history of the TRM so...watch this space

thanks to the few people who have supplied info for this thread,  still waiting on some of you to fill in the blanks :yahoo_silent:

Here’s my TRM which I have owned from new, originally white it was repainted red a few years later. It still gets ridden every now and again and apart from the grips and the tyres it’s still as I used to ride it in the 80’s.

I saw that TRM on flea bay, had one bitd (see page 1 of this post ;D) and would love another, but at £700 that seemed a bit rich :(

Got one finally & thanks to another very kind Rad mamber  :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch: :daumenhoch:!

I'm guessing this is one that's not reared it's head before, all i know is that it's been in a shed for 30 years & you can tell. Surface rust a plenty & an interesting paint job, I doubt it's OG but you never Know as I seem to remember that they did advertise painting them in just about any colour. No decals just raw & I mean raw which is why i reckon it was stripped back in the day & rattle canned.

My best mate had one in chrome back in the day but always i thought that there were serial numbers on the bottom of the BB ? Maybe he'd had his postcode stamped or something like that ?  Anyway here you go. Resto to follow.  :Great_Britain:

Nice one :daumenhoch:

I need to update the list and correct a few errors

Who did you get it off? Or do they want to remain anonymous ?

Still have loads of info/history to add, just too busy

Doesn't look as if it was a different colour underneath, unless it was stripped to bare metal, seems a bit unlikely if it was rattle canned 30 yrs ago.

Would be interested to know how much you paid ,cos I'm nosey ::)

Hi Pascoe

As you know I've actually got a TRM again, so my number 18, can go from had one bitd day, to WHITE ;)

This is me in early 83 I think when I just got it ;D Can believe I got into those jeans :-\

Anyway found one on ebay a few months back, looks ok in pics, but chrome was pretty tatty etc.

So had it powdered, and added DELCALS ;)

mine was white in the day, so really wanted a white one, I did think about orange cos that's the colour I sprayed it bitd, but decided white was the way :)

I doubt very much I'll ever build it up, so my record shelf is the final resting place for this ol fella :P
