Dyeing z rims

Hi all. I'm sure this has been covered before, but I couldn't find the exact answer in the sticky section. I've got some white zeds that i'm about to dye mid blue. Although the small tins of dylon dye have been discontinued and you now have to buy a 500g tin for about £50, there are a few sellers with some small tins still in stock. a few questions then:

How many small tins will i need to dye a pair zeds?
Or shall i just use rit dye instead? - if so how many packets?

**or if anyone wants to swap a white set of zeds for a dark blue set, please let me know***
NB: They are mike buff zeds, but the person who i got them off sanded the sides down, so the mike buff stamp is virtually gone.

Don't use dylon Andy, use Rit dye, available off eBay.

You will need some salt, a wallpaper steamer, and a big plastic bucket, bigger than 20" in diameter.

Thanks Dan. So Rit will work ok then? I've used it to dye grips before. I'll check out the rit colour catalogue now. Is it about 3/4 packets per set of rims? (adding just enough water to cover them of course).

I used 2 packs of rit and 2 tubs of salt to do 2 yellow hoops black.

I put the salt and rit in first, then the hoops. Then I coveted them with multiple kettle fills of boiling water. Use a stick or bamboo cane to agitate the powders thoroughly, then whack the end of the steamer in to maintain the working temp for the solution. Remember to keep stirring the solution about every 15 mins or so, and use the stick to turn the hoops over to get an even colouring.

This is purely based on yellow to black.

In your case, I would start by using 1 pack of dye to achieve your desired blue, or possibly take them out of the dye when the times right and they have reached the desired shade.

I took 3 hours doing my black ones.

i think madonna blue is the one. I need them to fit in with this. Looks like a good colour match as long as i leave them in the dye for a while?....

Madonna Blue is what you are after, But remember - when looking at the item wet in the dye solution it will look darker by about one to two shades

volume of water % to dye will also determined the colour shade - this means the shape of the item you are dying in will also effect the dying process

here is a old thread of mine that might help a bit 


the gorden ramsay way of dying wheels

take 1 set of OGK's - slightly faded


wash


pick out any dirty bits missed


scrape off any brake marks


bleach


hot water


salt


dye


put in and leave for 24 hours - turning and stiring every so often


cover


take out and wash in cold water - then dry


now ready to serve - i mean ride - DONE

Nice one Bendy.

When you say you have to turn and stir over 24 hours, do you get up during the night to do this?

   I just always go to bed late

it's just a case of the best time for it to soak in, is when the water is the hottest - and keep the solution moving will coat the rims/mags better than it just sinking to the bottom
