« on: March 24, 2016, 08:15 PM »
Probably been mentioned many times but here is a link to approx costs of import costs for your so call bargain ..
Just got hit with the silver dreaded card with a £110 bill from my postie..
I have bought loads from abroad and sometimes without charges ..
The only one I seam to get charged the most is with is USPS as it uses the post office for its final destination..
We all know it's hit or miss sometimes but it's 15% duty and 20 % vat..

It's a bloody lottery mate , i have spoke to people at the PO depot who couldn't explain it , i even called HMRC once and the women just kept saying all the information is available on their website .   ::)  I honestly do believe they do just make it up , i saw one the other day were the standard handling charge of £8 had risen to £13 !!  The whole thing is a joke imo  >:(

Since it been privatised it's a profit machine.
I asked about this £8 handling fee and just shrugs his shoulders..
Plus you cannot pay via card and must be cash only ..
They must keep it to pay for there Christmas bash.. :LolLolLolLol:
I will have to cash in my post office shares at this rate.. ::)

It is very random and inconsistent. I generally work off 20% vat plus the handling charge, and most of the time the charges do reflect this. I buy items from all over the world, but items from the US seem to be checked more thoroughly for their value, and charges added accordingly.  I recently had to pay charges on an order from Natsukashi in Japan, something I've never had to do before. Occasionally, some things do get through - especially if it isn't an online merchandise purchase. If the correct value had been put on the box of my GJS, I was expecting a customs bill of approx £700! Luckily the guy who sold it to me agreed to mark it down. The value was put as $100, so I ended up paying £42 in charges which I was delighted with in the circumstances.
