MK - What it means to you!?
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:12 AM »
Ok, I have been asked to provide some information about MK, which could be used in an article for a publication.

Now I don't want it all 'weighted' from my view point, so following talking to Pickle, we thought we would open this up to the attendees, so we could see it from your view point.

You never know your comments could feature in the write up.

So over to you folks, please be descriptive with the comments (not maybe, it's a weekend to go and get pissed with my mates!)

I will delete any daft posts  :daumenhoch:

Thank you !

MK to me a culmination of all the hard work put in by the bike builders and the experts from the OS BMX community, its to show case their build knowledge and dedication of their chosen BMX brands. Its also an opportunity to reaffirm friendships as most of us have families and work long hours and live 100’s of miles apart. For most of the year we only have a virtual/telephone friendship with some of the people, it’s the ideal time to unwind for 48 hours and catch up on personal evens and relive our youth, be it on the track racing, discussing what or where we use to ride or discussing “how to build it right”. There’s always the brand loyalty rivalry as to which is the best…..which will always be SE Racing. The whole atmosphere of the weekend is very relaxed and everyone is made to feel welcome and part of the Old School BMX family.
I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

MK for me could easily be an island in the middle of nowhere. I know that sounds a bit gay, but nothing surrounding MK maters, nothing back at home, work, bills etc matter. All that matters are what's going on on that island. The bikes, the endless chats with like minded people about bikes, the banter, the beers, the beats, the trackies, the trainers, but also the blues when you know you're on your way home and you gotta wait a whole year to visit the island again. :daumenhoch:

Apart from the obvious spelling errors our chunky friend summed it up perfectly

It's the highlight of the UK OS BMX calendar
A gathering of friends and rivals
An opportunity to show off your bikes, whether it's one bike or a tent full
A chance to prove you've still 'got it' on the track
A great excuse for a barbecue and (a few) beers
48 hours of pure escapism from the day to day grind
A chance to find that long lost part you need or scoop a bargain
An opportunity to ride a BMX around a lake with 60+ other people who really should know better
Male bonding taken as far as possible without actual bumming*

I love MK, only been twice but both times it has been brilliant - look forward to the next one  :)

* ok maybe there is some bumming

MK -  I drove there from Manchester with my brother, 2 complete bikes, a tent and all the trimmings squeezed into a Nissan micra!

Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

For me it's a chance to escape the 3 daughters and the Missus for a weekend, last year I brought junior, and we escaped to a place full of people we rarely see but still class as very good friends and we are surrounded by the things we love (BMX obviously)

Mk to me is the highlight of my year...having been back riding for a good few years, seeing those bikes again that you allways wanted, but never could afford,(and still cant all those years later) :daumenhoch: in one weekend is just incredible, the vibe, the buying and selling of bits for your rides, the awsome location, and the lake ride, its just an old school bmxers mecca, plus meeting lots of new people, making new freinds...mk has to allways be 1st in my diary every year...roll on mk13..... ;)

Once a year we look forward to meeting our friends, those we raced with in the 80s and 90s as well as the friends we have made in the cyber world of Rad.
Since discovering Rad a few years ago my life has changed dramatically. Through friends made on this site I have found a new partner, started a new family as well as a career change. I have raced at the British BMX championships, I have earned a number 1 plate  ::) and I have owned almost every bike I dreamed of owning back in the 80s when I could barely afford an inner tube let alone some of the exotic beauties I have had the privilege of owning in the last couple of year.
Rad is a family, we have a few black sheep, a few reprobates and a few members who hate each other with venom. But despite that we have some really good friends, real friends who have pulled together when other Rad family members have fallen on hard times.
I no longer have the time or the cash to build or collect bikes, but I love seeing the effort that goes into bringing old metal back to life. and then getting to see them in the flesh once a year.
I hope Radbash continues for a long time to come, I would rather spend a weekend at MK than a week at some hotel in Costa-del-saddo. In fact we have had to choose a holiday or radbash on three occasions in the past :crazy2:
A long time ago, in a land far away!

Mk is a release valve from adult life and a chance to be that kid from the 80's walking round your favourite bike shop.
Looking at all those bikes you had only seen in magazines and dreamed about becomes a reality all over again.

To see that look in someone's face you had when looking through the bmx action bike as a kid when looking at a bike you built is awesome.

RAD is just a forum where the os bmx trip begins , Mk is where those friendships become cemented. :daumenhoch:

For that weekend MK becomes the centre of the universe.

MK is a what the whole year is planned around.

It is all about feeling thirteen years old again and being aloud a few beers :daumenhoch:

The friends the Bikes the Gathering and the Racing. :4_17_5:
