I creak like fook when I'm not doing any sort of exercise, but then when I get too fat to button me jeans up & hit the gym I loosen up & the old bones stop aching.I reckon when I'm a flabby cnut the bones are taking a hit.

Probably is worth speaking to the doctor for a general chat.Most of us have old injuries and wear and tear - Greg is right, the fitter and more healthy you are, the easier it is, ie better posture, good muscle tone to support the joints etc etc (very important for knees, lower back).I know that I'm a fine one to talk but I know the fitter I am the better I feel and the easier my life is.
