Gentlemen.. may i introduce...... The Skyway Ace Rim
« on: November 16, 2012, 12:20 AM »
Been working on this idea for a while now and thought i would give you lot a sneak preview now the finish line is in sight.  :daumenhoch:

I started off with a tatty, damaged and hubless set of early etched logo skyways which Scorcher Mick was kind enough to let go at a good price.

Then the unthinkable... turn away now if you are easily shocked  ;D

Made a little jig for my router table

The first trial to see how they would take the cutter. It cut lovely with no chatter or splintering  :daumenhoch:

Final check of depth

The majority of the waste cut away

After shaping with a dremel sanding drum and some elbow grease

The finished rim once wet sanded and etched logo painted in

Got some red anno suzue hubs off JT Racing and Del was kind enough to send me a few different sized decals to get the scale right inside the hub

Laced them up tonight in a crazy pattern (spokes were too short  ;D) just to see how they would take the tension. I actually shat myself nearing the end of the lacing as the rim was a real crazy shape but it trued up well and should be lovely when i lace them in a 3x pattern  :daumenhoch:

Big thanks to Scorcher Mick, JT Racing and Del for helping me make this possible  :4_17_5:

Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Cheers guys  :daumenhoch:

Thought of both yellow and black for the spokes and nips Bendy but thought stainless would look a bit more old school. The Yellow was kinda hard to match as mags are a sort of bright egg yolk but i turned out plasticoat super gloss ral 1004 (i think it was) was a near perfect match :daumenhoch:

Cant really understand your other question Bendy?  :-[

If i read it right.... the rim was surprisingly rigid without the 5 spokes, You could get a bit of twist on it if you tried, but not much

yup that was the answer to my question  :D ;D

it's just that a normal metal rim doesn't flex (well hardly)

but a Z rim does

so i wanted to see where it fitted with out the spokes  ;)

Yeah to be technical...ish you could probably twist the rim out of true manualy about 16mm if you really went at it.

I imagine they would perform very similar to a z rim. The thicknesses of material is similar. Even though i countersunk the nipple heads you can see the square part of the nipples only just clear the surface of the rim so these are probably a touch thicker if anything  :daumenhoch:

This could've turned out like a dogs dinner if you hadn't done it properly, but I'm very impressed! Good innovation  :4_17_5:
