got a nice bath built - pretty tight round the frame ( in a drawer of a chest ) but was wondering if 500g of oxalic acid is enough for an overnight soak... I brought 1kg but want to do 2 frames ...

500g is plenty. I only use about 200g per bath and always have great results.

personally i'd use some Matey bubble bath or some lavender bath salts, few candles nice bit of ambient music , maybe a face pack cucumber always works well

your better off with a bit weaker solution n let it soak longer , don't forget ed it eats rust on the inside too

I was tapping it in gently then it all went ... well nearly all

reminds me of the time my house mate tried to make deep fried potato cakes with instant Smash ... "they keep disappearing when I put them in the oil!"

it had about 750 of powder in Jim... how many hours do you think I should leave it in...?

its been in for half an hour and I can still see some chrome

Overnight if you can.
I used 500g to do frame forks bars and any other chrome and metal showing any signs of rust.

What he said - just check it first thing - give it a bit of a light going over with an old toothbrush on any stubborn bits of rust

Prefer citric acid meself, as sometimes with OA I've noticed a bit of chrome 'bruising' - where some areas of the chrome have a slightly brown/blue tinge to it, but that was on chrome that didn't look like it had been plated well to start off with.

Its just done 8 hrs and gave it a good wash and clean - its done well but hasn't fully cleared the hardcore bits - now its going in for another 8 hrs then I will give it some fine wire wool and WD40 rubbin lovin

as dw says if the chrome is not good you will get discoloring but it does polish off , think it reacts with the nickle under the chrome? , usually get a bit round the weld area's, where the chrome is thin where most of the rust your trying to shift will be

keep checking it Ed is best advise, it will go pretty quick in the final stages once all the more severe rust is gone , if it comes out like tin foil, (LLP karma points awarded

) you left it in too long

don't forget to wash it out after, dry it well then oil the tubes inside

ED use stainless steel pan scrubbers the twisted swarf ones to rub it down with oil, fine wire wool will stick under the chrome n go rusty again

results... rust is gone but a bit pitted in areas ... the good bits of the chrome are spot on
