removing a stuck freewheel with a stick
« on: July 11, 2006, 02:13 PM »
i have been beating on this worn out freewheel for hours. broken every tool i have had in the little pin holes

so i got my mate to stick weld it together

then some more thwacks but this time on the sprocket teeth, allowing me to use a girthier drift.
and it flew off

bit brutal but i need the hub

also if you put it in a vice, it crushes the outer race, and you can use the wheel for leverage.

never had one stay put with that method.

i didnt really want to do the vice up too tight, in case it deformed the hub

ah...thats where you chickened out...ive wondered about it, but ive never crushed a hub either, or even worn the threads...the alloy seems to be a lot more flxible than the hardened steel of the freewheel.

if you dont want the freewheel take it to bits, remove all the bearings and the pawls. it will give you 2 nice flats that you can grip in a vice.Put a tyre on and use the wheel diameter as leverage, hay ho away you go. it is a mighty fine feeling when a freewheel is removed.

the way i have done it is to weld a solid bar about 12" to free wheel so it does not move then use bar to lever off freewheel, also heat from welding helps free it, this saves beating the sh*t out of it risking damage to hub, just remember to cover up hub with wet rag, because weld spatter will burn alloy hub and fook it :daumenhoch:

you are gonna struggle

rebuild the wheel loosely
it will save trying to hold the hub still and wrecking it
