Has Oldschool Bmx building had its day?
« on: October 13, 2012, 06:12 PM »
I see the prices on bits and I ask myself who can afford to build Oldschool bmx builds anymore, saw a ESP stem sell for almost $1000 recently!
What do you think? Can you build a bike from bitd with today's prices and rarity of the parts?

I have sparred in length with someone about this, and we are just sat on the fence at the moment  ::)  ;)

IMO, the price of parts going up is good for those that have them and want to sell at huge profits. That is, if there are any takers. It's nice to have a bike that's worth, say, £4000 but, only if you will ever sell it or, someone wants to buy. The big boys will always buy the most sought after stuff for their collection, but that's just it, a collection.

I like to ride mine so I tend now to go for the good survivor parts. No point ruining NOS stuff.

Just build how you want to. Some will say that it's not era correct, some will say that the parts are pants. Who cares. You build for yourself  :daumenhoch:

No, there's still plenty out there but as said, you just have to be patient and do some research if you're looking for a particular part.
It's all still there for the taking but no, most of it is not cheap unless you get lucky on the Bay.

Far from it IMO even though Cook stems have been fetching $2500 recently there are plenty of serious bargains and most away from ebay. Like other have said if your prepared to wait you'll get a deal, the vintage scene is getting stronger all the time but the parts are much harder to source. Makes the hunt more fun though.

i would say not , you can build a bike to whatever your budget there was a really nice burner on here the other week for under 300 and it was nice , then you can go the other way , you've had some top of the line bikes you had a top spec hutch  pro star with aerospeeds etc didn't you marty a bit back correct me if i'm wrong which even when you had it the parts added up to thousands of pounds so not much different to now i'd say i got a cracking 1979 nickel mongoose motomag complete with steel skyways for 350 quid and its one of my faves and i also bought just some forks for 350 quid, it just depends what you want and to what level you want to collect to me at this time it seems the top level stuff sells easy and fetches good money , cheap stuff sells because its cheap but the "alright" stuff noones jumping in take scorcher micks ripper a bit back that wouldn't be on here for sale for 5 mins , but it sat about till he knocked it down and the buyer got a bargain

we could call them ''Antique's"
antique |anˈtēk|
noun
a collectible object such as a piece of furniture or work of art that has a high value because of its considerable age:

Peaks and troughs continuing.

To many twats out for few cheap bucks, but has always been thst way, and will continue.

Then there s the bmx glitterati, who think they own the hobby

They are twats too.

Al about respect for your fellow hobbyist.

Some thing that's sadly lacking.

People will always build nice bikes though, so in that respect, everything is ok!
