Gav's Haro Zippo Retro Master Build - Finally Finished
« on: October 11, 2012, 09:42 AM »
I picked up a cheapy Zippo a couple of months ago that was badly listed on the bay :), originally it started life as chrome but when I collected it, some of the chrome had started to bubble and flake around the downtube and the stays so my plans to polish it up and keep it standard went out the window.

I really like the look of some of the retro masters that people have done in the past so decided i'd give it a go.  This is how it first looked when I got it:

I stripped the bike down completely and decided to have the frame and forks powdered white.  I then ordered the 85 Master decals from the one and only Del :)

Got the frame back yesterday and was really impressed with the powder job! :) ....Took me a while to unmask the areas that they had masked for me but its all part of the fun i guess :)

I couldnt wait until it was built to get the decals on so I set about it like a hooligan! :)

Finally got it finished after a few months of it sitting around  :) ...Heres the spec and the finished build:

'97 Haro Zippo F+F - Powdered white
'85 Master decals
Eco chrome 1 1/8th headset with red spacers
Polished Fusion stem
Diamondback chrome bars
AME Tri grips
DC Tech 4 levers - dated 85
Generic red cables
MX-1000 repop calipers
J.C layback post - 22mm with seatpost shim
Sinz seatpost clamp with Peregrine decal
Dominator seat
Araya 48's - Stripped, polished and relaced with white spokes and red Araya nips on Haro Megahubs
Odyssey Frequency-G 1.75 Tyres
Porkchop Chopsaw powerdisc
Porkchop Chopsaw 42T Chainring
Stainless chainring bolts
Haro Fusion chrome cranks with sealed US BB
Wellgo pedals

And then a cheeky little helmet too  :)

nice Gav... you are in the same trap I was in where the decals cost as much as the frame  :)

I love putting decals on ... its my fav thing  :)

Always thought these would have been a decent frame... apart from that horrible elephant sized down tube  :'(

Lookin good all the same  :daumenhoch:
Sixteen thirty-two. What is that? A year?   No, it's your top score on Pole Position.

Lol I know yeah :) .  Ive always loved the Zippo's design so I thought what the hell eh :) .  The overall build cost would probably have bought me about 5 Zippo's by the time its done haha.  Thinking about it....I probably should have just bought 5 Zippo's!!  ;D but its all about the satisfaction after eh

Im the same, the decals are my favourite bit, although these were a little monkey cos of the way the downtube is shaped near the head tube....kinda goes from round to oval doesnt it

So, with one thing and another ive got a little bit further in the build.  I stripped the original Araya's that came on the bike and I polished and rebuilt them using the original megahubs along with white spokes and anno red Araya nipples :) .  I also polished the Fusion stem up.....

I got mine done at redditch shotblasting and powdercoating bud.  They do a real nice job :) .....I would have sent it to Dan but I knew the finish of the work at my local coaters was top notch :)

Are you having yours powdered?

:LolLolLolLol:....Freakin expensive turd it turned out to be Ed but I reckon ive polshed it well :) .  I havnt racked it up yet price wise....not too sure if I dare to be honest.  bit of a labour of love throughout as I constantly thought...."its a Zippo...what are you doing??"

But hey ho....I love everything about it :) ....damn it yeah youre right about the relectors, I meant to ditch those but obviously got excited about taking some pics  ;D

I suppose i could go all out and get the plastic chain guard....front and rear fleccys and the ones for the wheels too.... he he  ;D

Crackin job there Gav, always thought the thickness of the downtube spoiled this frame but i could more than live with that. Sits lovely and nice to see those frequency g's in the flesh.
Been toying with getting some for my new build but images of them are thin on the ground  :4_17_5:
