Powder coat problem :(

Hi just got a frame back from powder coating , but the bottom bracket cups won't fit
as they powdered inside the bb 
Had a 4lb sledge hammer on it ( with a block of wood either side lol ) & nothing
 
Any ideas ? Part from dont take it there again  ta

I guess you could file off the powder from inside but it may chip bits off the BB

Get a stanley blade and cut the powder coating away around  the inner  edge of the bottom bracket tubing and then scrap the powder off with said blade insinde the bottom
bracket till the coating is off!! this should stop you chipping the stuff on the parts of the frame you can see!!

I had the same touble. I was told to stick the bearing cups in the freezer for a couple of hours, then take em out and you can push them in easy with just your hands. Worked a treat as no need for hammer or any tools

I always use a dremel with a little sanding disc on it and get all the powder off the inside of the BB and headset cups where they fit  If u don't and force the cups in it will crack the powder or chip it off making a mess . Same applies on painted frames  Also grease the cups before fitting that helps aswell.

The thing is if you have the cup on a very slight angle and I mean slight, it wont go, lay bike on side on a blanket with wood underneath the BB, and another piece of wood on top of the cup, hold it square and get someone else to do the hammering (If you trust them) some of mine have been a pig to get in and thats with no powder on the inner BB Tube, should go in mate!!

Just remove the paint from inside the BB using any one of the methods mentioned. Do NOT smash them in with a hammer or even inset frozen cups. Both methods work, but in a year or so when you want to swap cranks, or strip the bike to sell, you will wish you had never done that because they will not come out.

as already said remove any excess powder from the bb using a dremel/sandpaper etc...

you get this with almost every powder coater as they dont/wont spend the time masking up these areas

i know dan does but his powder is show condition and is reflected in the price

some people expect too much from a £25 powder coat job

thats why i always send my stuff to SBD-dan really knows not only how to paint and powder but what goes where and how to prep it right,just a lot less hassle and in hindsight costs less in the end

just tell your local powder coater to mask off the bottom bracket and head set tube, it's five minutes of his

time saving you stressfull hours of your time especially if you chip the paint work

good luck,  one little tip for you, run a knife or file at the  sharp edge of the bottom bracket where the cups go,

that will break the seal and the powder wont chip or flake off as now it's not connected but has a clean line

between it

Absolutly  went with the blade on the inside , cups fitted a treat
To be fair the guy I took it to does radiators & railings
