Spray-dyeing plastic, anyone tried it?
« on: September 23, 2012, 11:45 AM »
Hello peeps

Thanks to Brummie I've got some NOS Sharp griplocks coming my way, only thing is they're green and I need them to be black
Now if I rattle can them they're going to flake straight away, but after a bit of googling last night I found this stuff
http://www.vinyldye.co.uk/Brillo%20Vinyl%20Spray%20Dye%20Black
They claim it works on most plastics, is waterproof and 'sets' into plastic so shouldn't chip easily
Has anyone tried this stuff before? Or do you have a better solution?

would they not dye with dylon?

I thought that was just for nylon-based stuff, but never tried dyeing anything before
According to that site this stuff works on most kinds of plastic by 'melting' only a microscopically thin layer so it sets into it without dissolving

I like the idea of simply spraying a bit on rather than boiling vats of dye though so very tempted to try it out for research purposes
Might work well for other stuff too depending on how durable it is, seen positive reviews from people using it on car interiors etc

I'd try RIT or Dylon first, If it dont work then try the spray on method.

I'm going to try this stuff in the interests of research

I have tried dylon on some motor cross plastics, doesn't touch it. Best results were from sanding, wet n dry, then buff polish! Would be interested in the spray dye results,,

Would definately be interesting to see the results of this!  Ive found Dylon is getting harder to find nowadays (especially if you need multiples of the same colour) but RIT is still widely available if all else fails :)

 ???

but Dylon or RIT , won't touch plastic ,,only Nylon

i.e Skyway and some seats , but not plastic seats and grips  :-\

Interesting to see the plastic dying paint results  ::)

I bought some dye paint  non aerosol afew years ago

it was for black vinyl like car bumper/trim  paint but actually dyed rather than being a "back to black " type product
