Seat post tube too narrow.
« on: August 03, 2012, 01:01 PM »
Can anyone advise on the best way slightly open out a tight seat post tube.

I want to get this done before it goes off to Dan for it's new fluorescent green powder.  :)

Have you checked the width of the post?

I can get the post in using a flat bladed screw driver and it is a 22.2mm post.

I just wanted to make it the correct size more permanently so i don't have to use the screw driver on fresh powder.

No it's very clean and rust free inside, it's just the slot that isn't as parallel as it used to be and therefore tight at the top.

you can use an old post to open the gap up , bung it in so its just below the slot, preferably below the weld on the plate,   then force it backwards , use a clamp on loose to stop it spreading to far ,  better still if you can use some weight to force it back and the leave it a couple of days with the weight on it,  have used an old axle in the dropouts and a ratchet strap onto the seatpost to force the post back , left for a few days to let the steel move , on a raw frame you can use some heat to speed things up

Put the blade of the screwdriver inside a "cloth" dish cloth or one of them microfibre dusters (ask the Mrs  >:D )

and slide it in from the top with a gentle wiggle and ease it in to open it up

Bit like having bum sex with the Mrs don't just go stabbing in there or you'll knacker it  :daumenhoch:
I might actually build a bike this year instead of just hoarding parts :)

Thanks for the advice guys, think i'll start with the screwdriver in a cloth option first.

By the way Peter, WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION THERE! ::)

There is a little bit of overspray in there but nothing too serious, the slot definitely narrows towards the top though.

Doesn't show all that well in the photo.

The best way I have found on my Bodgin escapades  ::) is 2 Use a Rawshield in there and tighten it up it then pushes the tube out as it expands  :daumenhoch: Hardware store and a search 4 the closest size is the way 2 go  :P
