AF means across the flats of the spanner. It really is just a guess though as ive never come across metric AF bolts, but that doesnt mean they dont exist

what doesn't fit..the internal of the socket onto the bolt or the outer of the socket into the crank arm?

Is it the outer diameter of the socket that is stoping it fitting into the crank arm? I had the same problem, had to grind down the socket, if you don't have the facilities to do this let me know, pretty sure mine is also 15mm, I'll post it to you as a loan.

Well I must admit it doesn't insert very well but its the only 15mm socket I have. Can you get 15mm that are tapered? Has anyone got one that will fit...?!!

will a proper crank puller tool not fit ?   they have 14 / 15mm  double ended socket and also a thread in puller for the arms

As the above says, get a crank puller because you are likely going to need it to get the 400 arm off the tapered spindle anyway! Or you'll end up getting a hammer out, which may have been acceptable in the 80's but not on those cranks now

       yup don't want to be hammering them off,       puller tool is one of those tools when you use one for the first time you think "why the fook didn't i buy one of these years ago"
