spline drive set ups

just fitted a s&m L7 spline drive chainring and a set of profile no boss cranks to my bike





i was wondering who else on here has gone spline drive? i know olly (mdbh) has

chain tension is now perfect and equal through a whole rotation of the cranks, no more tight and slack spots

Great for getting chain alignment spot on 

They should have done this years ago, i'd be all over a spline drive 44t ripsaw

got a home made 18t one on my flatland bike, the hole is not quite centre so it has a tight spot and a really slack spot.

I like the idea of the spline drive set-up, makes a lot of sense when you think about.

I might consider one of those for my Failure which runs WTP Royal cranks as and when the current sprocket is had it.

replaced for free even when out of warranty so not bothered

Been running a tree sprocket (first ones to do a spline I think) on a ti axle for years, I am only 10 stone though

I dont see why they would fret away, They have a steel insert. Or do you mean the junction between the insert and the sprocket gets movement.

48 spline crank arms have been know to loosen and wobble through fretting. The splines are pretty fine after all. If that sprocket is say 8mm thick, it's still having to transmit the same horsepower as 20-25mms worth of crank arm spline.

rob the worse case scenario if it does begin to wobble and depending on what is actually worn

new axle 48 spline 19mm is £20

or a new spline drive insert (kinda like a top hat washer) should be no more than £10

they are very tight to get on, you have to place them on the end of the axle then put a 19mm socket over the spline insert and hammer it on, so i cant see it moving much tbh esp on a park bike, race bike maybe different

I can see what your saying Rob, But is it not the taking off and re-fitting that causes the wear/wobble. I've got an older set of profiles that the arms slide off and on without any tools but still dont wobble yet.

Clearly no real problems to speak of then.

Gary, your old cranks would surely wobble if the bolts were left loose for any length of time.
